April 22, 2025 at 6:57 amNewly married and I received jewellery from my parents, in laws and wedding guests.Currently this jewellery is safely kept in my bank locker.
However my mother in law is planning to open a locker with her and my husband’s name. Im a fully functioning adult who can definitely handle this. How best can I keep this in my control?
Also if my husband and I part ways what are the implications of this stree dhan

April 22, 2025 at 6:21 pmWhat is the legal rule behind this? In the scenario of demise, does gold will be retained by husband or can be claimed by girls mother?

April 22, 2025 at 12:00 pmNever, and i mean never hand it over, atleast not until you can blindly trust your husband. And even then, only keep it in a joint locker with the husband, no mother in law or anyone else should have access. My best friend’s sister is going through a bitter divorce, her ex husband and Mil kept all her jewellery in their custody (worth over 25 lakhs gifted by her parents) initially, and are now are refusing to hand it over and are claiming in court that they don’t have it. It’s almost confirmed that they have sold off the jewellery etc but this becomes very difficult to prove so they may unfortunately never recover that jewellery. They even kept all the silver that was gifted. Be extremely careful. -

April 22, 2025 at 6:07 pm1. Keep all the jewellery you own in your own locker with only your name or a joint locker with you and your husband’s name.
2. Stree dhan is yours by law, even gifted jewellery. Why is your husband opening a locker with his mother? Wouldn’t she already have one with her own husband (your father in law)? -

April 23, 2025 at 5:24 amNo. I have hit a harsh reality in my marriage but im not having an affair. I need to be ready for rainy days just in case – Have been gullible in the past and now choose to be smart about all this.Better to know what the law says as culturally people try to push their agendas.

April 23, 2025 at 7:08 amEven if you give them , its still yours.
At later stages if a conflict arrises, this will be a factor against your husband, as your lawyer will say they have kept your stree dhan without your consent.
