May 6, 2025 at 11:22 am**Background:**In 2020, during COVID, I lent a friend ₹60–70k due to his mother’s medical issues. He promised to repay within 6 months, and I agreed.
Fast forward 2 years—I had to beg him to return my money. He gave countless excuses and even fake screenshots. Eventually, I got tired and decided to go the legal route.
**2022:**
In December, I searched for lawyers and found a friend who was working under a reputed lawyer. She offered to handle the case for ₹10,000. I agreed because I just wanted my money back.
**2023:**
* Around March 2, she filed the case in Delhi.
* She asked for:
* ₹1,000 for drafting and filing
* ₹3,000 for court fees
* ₹4,500 as part of her fees
* ₹700 for some process formI paid everything. I even asked if I could claim these legal costs from the person I’m suing—she said yes.
Later that year, after some hearings, the judge instructed us to publish a notice in the newspaper (to show the defendant had been informed).
She asked:
* ₹4,000 for a local newspaper
* ₹7,000 for a national oneShe said it had to be done via the **Nazrat Branch** (which handles legal publication). I agreed and paid ₹11,000 in total.
I asked for receipts **but never received any.**
**2024:**
The judge was replaced. The new judge often missed hearings due to medical leave or half-days. As a result, **the entire year was wasted**.
**2025 (Now):**
Today I received a call saying the hearing finally happened—but the **Nazrat Branch lost some slip/document** and the responsible person has been suspended. Apparently, **no publication was ever done**, meaning I lost ₹11,000.
She now says we must redo the publication or the case can’t proceed. If it costs the same again, I’ll have spent ₹31,200 in total, broken down as:
* ₹1,000 (drafting)
* ₹3,000 (court fees)
* ₹4,500 (lawyer fees so far)
* ₹700 (process form)
* ₹4,000 (local paper)
* ₹7,000 (national paper)
* ₹11,000 (Might have to pay this again for publications)
* Totals comes to 31.2KI still owe her ₹5,500 of the ₹10,000 fee she initially quoted. But I’m unsure whether to trust her anymore since I’ve never received a single receipt (apart from the case filing slip). I don’t know what to do next. Neither any publications/ newspaper clips.
Lastly, she said you will receive interest like of last 2 years and the other guy has to pay me around 90k!
Please layout your opinions am I being paranoid or this is legit? Also, guide me next what will happen?

May 6, 2025 at 1:41 pmI’m a lawyer here. No one files a suit for recovery of such a small amount as the out of pocket expenses until the suit is pending are recurring and inevitable.-

May 6, 2025 at 2:31 pmHonestly, I wouldn’t want to validate your suspicion when I am not aware of what really transpired. But you’re surely at free will to ask for acknowledgment/receipts so that you don’t feel cheated.-

May 6, 2025 at 4:52 pmI never meant to say so. All I’m saying is that I have no clue under what circumstances you had to pay those amounts and whether they were legit or no, so I shouldn’t comment on it.

May 6, 2025 at 1:43 pmNever ever go to court for money related issues, property/tenant issues…when you go to court for these issues the defendants of the case get strong and get security…I’m talking from a personal experience…you’ll never get your money or get your property tenant free if you go to court…but use muscle power ,police power…if you would have given some SI rank officer of a police station ₹5000 he would have harrassed that mf and would have got your money back… -

May 6, 2025 at 6:26 pm1. Withdraw the case, it will eat up a lot of money and mental peace. Not worth it.
2. Never lend money to anyone with whom you want to keep a good relationship.
3. Have a thumb rule, lend only that much money what you can let go.
4. Meet the friend sometime later and give him your peace of mind, not on call or text. It will help you get closure and move on.Take care.
