Changing my name — can I skip updating old educational documents?

Hello!

I’m planning to change both my first and last name. I recently got admission to a university in India (haven’t joined yet), and I want to begin my studies with the new name.

After going through similar questions on this sub, I understood that the name change process is relatively straightforward for IDs like Aadhaar, PAN, passport, and bank accounts. But it gets murky when older educational documents like 10th, 12th, and bachelor’s marksheets are involved.

**My question is:**
Can I legally change my name in just the official IDs (like Aadhaar, PAN, etc.), and request the new university to use my new name for all future academic records — *without* having to update my previous marksheets?

Has anyone done this, or know how universities typically handle this?
