May 6, 2025 at 6:03 amSo my name consists of two words A B( eg: Raj Aryan). My dad’s name is three words C D E ( eg: Sharan Mishra Kumar)In my class 10 certificate, my name is given as just Raj Aryan while my father’s name is given as Sharan Mishra Kumar.
In my passport which is currently expired, my given name is given as Raj Aryan while surname is given as Sharan.
When I recently applied to renew my passport, the person who was filling the form told me that if I want to make the names in my 10th certificate and passport same and avoid issues in the future, I need to keep the given name as Raj and surname as Aryan but I’m really confused as almost everyone I spoke said ur surname must be the name of ur dad and not the second part of ur name. I really need ur advice pls help me out. Thanks in advance. All the names used in this post are fictional.

May 6, 2025 at 6:13 ampeople are stupid, your surname is premised on your 10th/12th marksheet mostly. In my case whatever my parents surname is, i chose to have just a single name as my name, no surname. eg: Madonna. and thats it! in my passport/driving license/aadhar everywhere, its just ‘Madonna’. Can’t be associating with the Brahminical imposed hierarchized system of oppression can we?-

May 6, 2025 at 6:14 amAbsolutely incorrect that your surname should be the same as your father’s surname. The passport officer was right, you should put Raj as first name and Aryan as your last name. Trust me, you will have to deal with a lot of paperwork and headaches later if you have different names in different documents. -

May 6, 2025 at 6:19 amYour class 10 certificate is alright. It’s the way you like it. But for passports, it’s generally the agents who apply and make all these mistakes. They think the surname must be the father’s name. This is of course not true. Now that your first passport has your father’s name in it, there is one way to resolve it. The procedure for the passport name update is that you need to put up an ad in 2 newspapers, one in the local language and the other in English. Your name change ad will appear as “I have changed my name from ‘A B C’ to ‘A B’ for the passport name update”. The newspaper agency will take care of it. You need to submit an affidavit to the newspaper agency.
The next steps for you are:
1. Put your passport application on hold as you can show the newspaper ad once it’s published. That will be sufficient as a proof to change the name to A B, A being given name and B being the surname.
2. Contact any newspaper agency in your city or state. Just Google “name change newspaper ads” to find out more
3. Complete the procedures with them and get it published
4. Once published, reschedule your appointment.
5. Take a newspaper with you along with other documents. The passport officer will happily accept it
6. Your passport will be processed smoothly with the new naming style you chose.Once again, you are doing the right thing. Your name must not necessarily include your father’s name. That’s a myth. Your father’s name has a dedicated place for it in the passport last page.
Keep us updated on how it goes!

May 6, 2025 at 6:39 amWhatever name you decide on, try to maintain the same version on all your documents. In India, itβs a mess and lengthy process to fix your name as we donβt follow proper standards.
