I’m doing research for a story and need help understanding the legal and procedural aspects of how such cases are handled in India, specifically in Telangana (though I assume the general process is similar across states).
A group of youngsters discover bruised, unconscious people lying in a ditch. They call the police and wait. On realizing that the victims are still alive, they admit them to a hospital.
I want to understand the official process in such situations:
Hospital Procedure: What are the legal and procedural requirements for hospitals in such cases? Do they immediately inform the police? Are there specific forms or medico-legal steps that must be followed?
Police Jurisdiction: I assume the SHO of the police station under whose jurisdiction the bodies were found would be in charge of the case. Is this correct? Would that police station be the primary investigation office?
Investigation Process: What is the official protocol the police follow in such cases—especially when it’s unclear whether it’s an accident, assault, or something else? Is there a step-by-step procedure or manual they are expected to follow? Is there an equivalent of District Attorney(DA) here?
Reference Material: Are there any government guidelines, manuals, or books I can refer to for a better understanding of how police and medical staff are expected to handle such cases?
