April 4, 2025 at 1:05 pmI got a call from a random number. I picked it and it was cybercrime department and they said I have been reported for abusing a girl on instagram. I thought it was spam so I ignored. Then they called again and said they have a notice. Then they showed up to my place and showed me chat log of a random account with random username saying the IP was linked to my sim card from jio. I have been asked to come to the cyber crime police station. What should I do? -

April 4, 2025 at 8:36 pmI’m pretty sure it’s just a scam or someone with links to the cops who OP has pissed off trying to scare OP.IPs are dynamic is 100% true and OP said it’s a random account and chats.

April 4, 2025 at 9:17 pmOP, did you recently use or get your aadhar or any id proof xeroxed? Given how โsecurelyโ PII is handled in our country, I donโt think itโs difficult to get hold of random aadhars and contact numbers. NAL, but looks like a pretty good scam. Maybe ask a friend to call them from a different number (change info on truecaller first) and pretend to be a dumbwit tuition student or something to verify their identity. Or..why not share the number here, we all can have some fun! ๐คฃ -

April 4, 2025 at 11:14 pmNo one has a fixed ip assigned to their sim or any internet connection . You need to pay extra to get a static ip and that facility is only available with a few ISPs. Getting someone’s aadhar/id documents is not a big deal.
100% scam or extortion unless you actually did it.

April 5, 2025 at 12:34 amThey will rob you. Looks like a organised group. People say they are from GST dept and take the victim to random location, threaten with various sections and penalties and finally take 50k. Funny part is they’re not even govt employees but they do get information from various sources. And more over No govt dept calls you on Sunday. If it’s real police the dealing will be different. No negotiations. Visit nearest police station and let them know.-

April 5, 2025 at 3:51 amBased on where you live – reach out to your nearest cyber crime police station. There is a station officer at SHO level or sometimes a HQ head who is typically ACP rank officer – most probably you canโt meet this level. But at least get this contact from the website. Usually these are updated and correct.
When anyone reports a cyber crime (and anyone can do from anywhere in the country – there is no jurisdiction logic for cybercrime) – ask for the complaint details and there is usually a complaint ID etc. Itโs not necessary to for a real cop to share this with you but as a citizen youโve a right to ask.
Cyber crime police are usually not as rough as crime branch cops – so the demeanour can also reveal a bit – the crimes here are mostly bitcoin fraud or Paytm scam etc.
Cyber harassment or bullying against women is (as bad as it is) not really a priority unless the girl in question is a big deal (usually if it is a celebrity – itโs taken with priority).
The crime against women is serious only if it affects their modesty in India – so a rape or direct physical confrontation like assault or touching inappropriately or abuse of highest standard again physically can lead you to trouble.
In a digital crime – only when you share her nude pics or videos or send her any pornographic material or morph her own pics and share it with her on WhatsApp etc. is when youโre a gone case. Just saying fuck you even to a random girl – no one is going to arrest you on that trivial detail.
So context of that chat is also important. Like understand what is the โabuseโ. If you wouldโve said – โyouโre a fucking idiot Nehaโ – thatโs nothing. But if the chat has something sexual (modesty) – then itโs problematic.
Iโve a DCP cyber crime as a close relative – so I know how these things work. Iโve even seen many FIRs of cyber harassment and abuse / theyโre very trivial and mostly from celebrity fans associations or similar.

April 5, 2025 at 4:28 amNAL. First things first – take a lawyer. Having said that, associating IP with you is not simple unless they’ve taken a couple of steps.1. IP addresses are dynamic and each individual does NOT get a unique IP. It’s a shared IP with one public address and internally thousands of users will be mapped to that public end point. Jio WiFi and all others use NAT to achieve this. Same is also extensively used by network providers else you will run out of IP addresses.
2. Because of this, public IP information even if obtained is practically useless.
3. Meta cannot and will not share any IP information or device Mac without a court order. Police can only get public IP and dynamic Mac
4. Jio cannot and will not share above without the same. Police will have to verify devices with that Mac at that point in time accessing the IG domain. They’ve no idea which account you accessed or what you did unless it’s in the URL because comms are in HTTPS.I highly doubt these steps have been followed.

April 5, 2025 at 10:00 amWhile this is most probably a scam, Govt regulations now require all ISPs to maintain nat table logs for 2 years. So theoretically they can trace your IP.

April 5, 2025 at 6:55 amPut an RTI in the cyber crime department or the ACP incharge of it. Ask for your complaint that has been registered and a copy of it. In Delhi, it is online.
Put it under life and liberty section of RTI. They have to respond within 2 days. Otherwise you will get it in a month.
Ask for notice for appearance from Police.
Write letters to the area DCP, Delhi commissioner, your local MLA, Delhi Home minister, CM ASAP explaining your problem.
Benefit- If this is a scam it will be flagged even if real police is doing it.Keep a lawyer in back up. Be polite with police. Do not engage. If you engage or go rude, they will create a case out of thin air.

Verify their random address on Google maps and see if it is genuine or fishy. If it is Fishy, don’t even go there. If genuine, go with atleast two or three elders, Lawyer also if possible. -
