I’m a person staying in a rural village in Surat,Gujarat, India. My grandfather had many marriages. So he has 4 children. Two sons and two daughters. One son (my father) youngest with one woman and another son (eldest) with another woman. Two daughters having same mother.

My grandfather nature is not that good. He’s somewhat selfish, narcissist, stubborn etc.

Eldest son had a dispute with my grandfather cause he couldn’t put up with his behavior. But he still does takes loan in his name. Does farming on the land with my grandfather’s name on the papers.

Recently a land got sold on which there was a dispute with some other party. It got sold for 1.4 crores (55% for us and 45% for other party).

My grandfather now doesn’t want to give him anything. He wants to leave everything to us (youngest son). Eldest son has a dispute. And he says daughters shouldn’t stake claim as they’re now married. Everything that Grandfather has given to us is because my mother is a kind, innocent, obedient, loving woman. She does her duty as a daughter-in-law diligently. Even one daughter staked claim when the land got sold. She showed true colors immediately after the land got sold.

But the disputed land was bought by my father’s mother. Everyone in the village knows that, I think grandfather knows but won’t admit it. As it may hurt his reputation.
He used to behave rudely with us all this time but as he got older, he softened to us. Is it our problem? That grandfather gives us everything (money, gold) cause my mom put up with him. She has won him over. As a reward he favours us. He’s impressed with my mom’s selfless attitude?

Now can they stake any claim on the money obtained by selling the land, since that land isn’t ancestral but bought? Where else can they stake claim? How to legally keep them afar?

If it is not ancestral land then grandfather can decide however if person does real farming then there are many laws which may come in support .

Self acquired land can be disposed off by owner as per his wish. However to maintain harmony and family ties you all should work out some arrangement where no one feels abandoned as land issues are a major cause of dispute between families.
