April 2, 2025 at 6:22 pmMy maternal grandparents raised my aunt’s four children (3 daughters, 1 son) because my uncle was in the army and my aunt lived with them. Now, out of the three daughters, one is married, and the other two live with my aunt outside the village. My cousin (the only son) is also married. The issue is that ever since my cousin got married, he has become greedy and now wants to sell my maternal grandparents’ land. He even mistreats them, but when questioned, he claims he has the right to the land since he has lived with them. My mother confronted my aunt about this, which led to a fight, and now they haven’t spoken for months.
My grandparents refuse to leave their village house and live with us, as they are emotionally attached to my cousin since they raised him. I fear that after their passing, he might sell the land without informing anyone.
I need legal advice on how to prevent him from selling the land, ensuring my grandparents’ wishes are honored. What legal steps can be taken to secure their property? Is there a way to put legal restrictions on selling ancestral land? Any help would be appreciated.
They are currently in Uttar Pradesh.TL;DR: My maternal grandparents raised my cousin, and now he wants to sell their land. He mistreats them and uses the excuse that he lived with them to claim rights. My mother and aunt had a fallout over this. Grandparents refuse to leave their home. I fear he might sell the land after their death. How can we legally prevent this?
