Why is lease deed required

I live in a housing society in Pune. We have been living in this society from the last 40 years. The society alloted us a plot of land after the previous owner did not pay the full amount to the society. Now my deceased grand father did not create a lease deed, and now the society is pushing us to complete it. How can I approach this. I am very new to this and it gives me a lot of anxiety. Any lawyers from the city which can help me out here?
