March 21, 2025 at 7:33 amWe installed a new kitchen chimney in our kitchen. The vent leads outside. There is 10-15 foot gap between the two houses. And I haven’t noticed any smoke going into their home. They keeps threatening us to remove it or they will take us to police etc. Is there any rules regarding this. I would love to know. So I can show it to them next time they come. The kitchen chimney is from reputed brand and costed us around 25k. So, i hope the chimney itself is following all the environmental regulation etc. -

March 21, 2025 at 12:59 pmExactly OP, just change the direction to up, and both you and your neighbor will be happy.Remember to cover it up with some shade or vent cover to prevent rain water or debris from falling in.
If you can afford to, take it till the top floor. Otherwise, 10-12 inches of pipe would be enough to change the flow direction.

March 22, 2025 at 2:07 amBro it’s not always about legality. Sometimes you gotta be a good neighbour and not inconvenience them. That’s how you get to live in harmony in a community, not by constantly harassing each other.

March 21, 2025 at 9:30 amBe a sensible neighbour and change outlet direction. It’s not that smoke enters the room or not, the oil spoils wall and other things too. -

March 21, 2025 at 9:51 amChange the direction or vent it upwards little bit high. (In vastu) These objects act like an arrow and disturb/offend the human unconscious mind and make the person feel agitated (even if it is at sufficient distance), is it possible to cover the exit of vent or pipes show that it’s not visible to him like cover with a fake plant ornament or a wooden sheet that has smiley or flower printed on it. -

March 21, 2025 at 11:47 amJust spend some for a police bribe when the police arrive and pretend to know some politician. Also I recommend that you add an additional pipe to your chimney and let it on the roof. Because that is the correct way the chimney should be installed.

March 21, 2025 at 11:52 amYes, they can lodge a complaint against you for air pollution, noise pollution as well as fire hazard both at a police station, and your local fire department. Better get a fire NOC from your fire department if you already haven’t. -

March 21, 2025 at 2:16 pmHi, the technician you fitted the chimney should have done better. It is definitely your responsibility that the chimney shouldn’t face your neighbour’s house. Put yourself in the neighbour’s shoes and try to think how you will react. Also, extending the pipe length affects the functioning of the chimney (it reduces the suction), so call the technician who fitted it, and change the direction of the outlet.

March 21, 2025 at 2:22 pmI checked the chimney again. It has sort of a plate and seems like it disperses the smoke around it instead of throwing it towards houses. Can you tell me if that’s a thing.-

March 21, 2025 at 2:34 pmHi, all chimney exhaust releases particulate matter consisting of oil, carbon oxides and other fumes. If you have a doubt, then change the direction towards the roof of your house and see the black deposits yourself. The cost of the chimney affects its efficiency, it won’t turn the fumes into clean fresh air.
Kindly listen to everyone here and get it fixed.
To add more context, we also bought a chimney recently, and did a fair amount of research about it. Check the maximum outlet pipe length and diameter of the outlet pipe, and then find the solution which doesn’t affect others.

March 21, 2025 at 2:26 pmThey have no legal basis but they can close your chimney exhaust. There is no legal basis for you to fight for this either. -

March 21, 2025 at 3:14 pmDiscuss the issue with your neighbour do a joint inspection when the impact is felt by him. Maybe installing somthing like [this](https://www.famcomfg.com/products/chimney-caps/round-base-chimney-caps/), would help -

March 21, 2025 at 4:19 pmThere’s nothing an unbiased police can do. But you know police like to collect money from both sides. So talk to your neighbor and come up with a solution where they are included but keeping the chimney and reducing the smoke or altering direction. That’s cheaper than going to our police

March 21, 2025 at 7:24 pmThe pipe of the chimney is usually made of aluminium foil and is flexible. Get a two feet piece and bend it upwards and have it fixed to the current outlet. 10-15 feet gap means there is good enough setback between the two houses and mostly compliant with any byelaw in India and shouldnt cause such an issue but if they are complaining it could be pointed to their window or opening that make the fumes go into their house. -

March 22, 2025 at 1:08 amNAL..OP kitchen chimneys have grease filters that filter out grease and debris. This filter has to be cleaned from time to time. Unless you have a jet engine powered suction fan, grease should not spew out. Also kitchen chimneys don’t blast smoke out to distances of 10-15 feet except in case of commercial ones used in hotels or industry setups.
So don’t worry about that aspect. Your neighbour is just worried about hypothetical problems created in his mind. Speak to him and also go to his house and ask your family member to fry something and turn the chimney on on the highest fan setting and see if there is any smoke/grease or debris are blasted out reaching the neighbours house. It will be good if you go with another person and have that person record the whole thing. This will serve as proof that you have made attempts to sort the issue.
In case the neighbours are adamant and insist on calling the police, tell them to go ahead. Police don’t have time to deal with such trivial and petty issues.
If the cops do come over, file a counter complaint on the neighbour for harassment and threatening your mother.
Hope this helps..
