March 15, 2025 at 3:15 pmMy friend (early 20s) broke up with her bf years ago but he emotionally blackmailed her that he will kill himself so she has been pretending to be his gf all this while. Now she has had enough and blocked him from everywhere but he’s calling from different numbers and also sending multiple OTPs to her number after she blocked all calls. That guy has physically assaulted her in the past and regularly threatened her with suicide.
1. Will my friend be in trouble if the guy kills himself?
2. What action can she take without creating too much scene with the police? -

March 15, 2025 at 3:26 pmI have been in that situation and speaking from experience most of the people who threaten sucide are not the one who will actually do it and if you think he might then you should file an official complain in the nearest police stationIf going to police station is too much then call women helpline no they will take care of it

March 15, 2025 at 3:33 pmShe did talk to them. They said nothing will happen to her and if she wants then she can file a complaint. She then cut the call. What are the next steps? Can the complaint be registered online or on call?-

March 15, 2025 at 3:51 pmYes she can file a complain online but local police will be involved ultimatelyJust a advice – stop talking to the guy block him from everywhere and give it sometime
if he does commit sucide she won’t be responsible but yea if he specifically mentions that he did this because of you then police will want to talk to you about your relationship with him
You won’t be responsible if he can’t bear the pain of breakup

March 15, 2025 at 4:28 pmThe police should not harass your friend if the complaint is made properly, but handling it the right way is important to avoid unnecessary complications. A well-drafted complaint can protect her from any unwanted legal entanglement if things escalate.

March 16, 2025 at 3:15 amI’m not a lawyer but this reminds me of my ex. Similar personality and he said the same thing when he was on his terrace and I asked him to jump off cuz I had enough. He climbed the wall, looked down for a few seconds and came back inside and started abusing me for “not caring”.
It’s usually not something to be concerned about, most people who have this personality are often scared and only do that to control and instil fear. She should just focus on healing the narcissistic abuse she went through instead.

March 16, 2025 at 3:21 amYes but I’m assuming it wasn’t a serious cut that had him hospitalised for weeks right?Trust me, this breed of people only respond to no contact.
She needs to change her number and disappear from everywhere for a few months/year (mutual friend circle, places he knows to find her etc)
If she has any proof of abuse (texts, call recordings) then that can serve as a strong evidence if the matter gets worse. Ask her to keep call logs of calling the women’s helpline ready just in case.I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about!

JJaishark997
OP
March 16, 2025 at 3:36 amYes, the cut was not serious. He’s mailing her now. She has blocked from everywhere and has screenshots of all the proofs.

March 16, 2025 at 1:00 pmYou are asking on legal advice. If you don’t, preemptively, alert the police and the person kills himself, you will have to prove that you weren’t abetting AND hiding evidence of killing himself.
In court. After 4 or 5 years of the legal procedure.

March 16, 2025 at 1:16 pmLet’s say the person threatening suicide kills him/herself and names you in a note.Police comes to you and you tell them he was blackmailing you.
Next question will be,”Why didn’t you call me the police?”
Addendum – “Did he/she tell you how he/she will do it”?
If the answer is yes, You helped in suicide.
If the answer is no,” Why should police believe you?”
Any case will take 4 to 5 years to reach a judge. That time will include
1. Fir
2. Investigation
3. Police threatening witnesses/accused to get bribe.
4. Police getting bribes for dead people’s relative to implicate whoever they point to.
5. ChargesheetThat would be the time when you give the evidence in the front of the judge.
Happy running pillar to post.
Or, you can tell it preemptively to police/parents and save all this hassle. Remember to record all your conversations and chats.

March 16, 2025 at 1:18 pmThank you so much for the detailed response. Really appreciate it. Can I inform the police without it leading to a FIR? Because if a FIR gets filed then also the police hassle will continue on.-
AAaravdude593

March 16, 2025 at 1:27 pmIt doesn’t lead to FIR.You tell them someone is blackmailing you with suicide. They will call him/her up, will threaten them and that would be it. This won’t end up in FIR.
If he/she kills him/herself, you can show the chat/conversation with police in investigation that you tried to help him/her, during investigation. Same could be used in court.
In a suicide case, an FIR can be suo moto, on the basis of evidence or can be filed by relatives. No suicide, No FIR.
In fact, YOU can ask for a case of blackmail on the person threatening suicide if you have the evidence. Police will threaten the guy/girl and let him/her go after taking the bribe. Only FIR will be filed if you insist on it and even then, they can convince you to let it go if they got enough money.
