May 3, 2025 at 4:52 amHi fellow redditors. I had a bitter experience regarding a traffic Violation in Navi Mumbai recently and want some advice for the next occurence.
Will jot out the incident first:
On 01.05.2025 at around 12 PM, I took a U -Turn on the Palm beach road on my 2 wheeler (Following the directions as per Google Maps). Just after I took the turn, I was pulled over by 2 traffic cops standing there.
He then checked my license and took some photos of bike & me (with helmet) and then asked me to remove helmet and took few more photos. Then he said you have to pay court fine 3k-6k and license impound for 3 months because you drove wrong side and did lane cutting. I told him I just followed the directions as per navigation it isn’t displayed anywhere that there’s no U turn from this signal. To this he said if there is no U-turn light in the signal you can’t take a U-turn there.
I said okay and requested him to give me the challan. Then he started elaborating that it will be difficult for you to run around courts and won’t be able to drive for 3 months etc. basically I sensed he was ready to let go for some bribe. I asked him what he wanted. He said I want to help you, give me 2k I will let go. I said I don’t have my wallet or cash at all you can very well issue challan I will see what to do next.
He asked the cost of my bike (I should have lied but I told the truth that it’s around 3 lakh). He finally agreed for 500 after lots of cajoling. Luckily my brother had a 500 note. I gave it and went away.
My questions are.
1. Was I at fault ?
2. If he had issued the challan, could I not pay online? Do I have to actually visit a court to clear the fines?
3. Can license be impounded for such petty things?
4. What should be my actions for future occurences?Thanking all in advance.
