May 8, 2025 at 2:09 pmIt can be misused by criminals to either buy sim cards, create financial transactions or worse they can take loans and ruin your credit score. You should immediately file a FIR and also report to Income Tax Department about the loss. If you havenβt already linked your PAN to Aadhar you should get that done as well. -

That’s a worrying situation, and it’s good you’re taking it seriously. Here’s what could potentially happen and what you should do now:
Worst Things That Could Happen:
* Financial Fraud: Someone could use your PAN details and selfie to apply for loans, credit cards, or open bank accounts in your name. You could then be held liable for these debts or fraudulent activities.
* Identity Theft: Your PAN card is a crucial identity document. With your selfie and PAN details, someone could potentially impersonate you for various illegal activities, such as renting properties, purchasing goods, or even for more serious crimes.
* Tax Evasion/Fraud: Your PAN is linked to your tax information. Someone could potentially use it to carry out fraudulent financial transactions or evade taxes, which could lead to scrutiny or legal issues for you.
* Impact on Credit Score: If loans or credit cards are taken out in your name and not repaid, it will severely damage your credit score, making it difficult for you to access credit in the future.
* Misuse for Illegal Activities: In some cases, PAN cards are misused for illegal activities like SIM card purchases for illegal communication or as a fake ID in criminal activities.
What You Can Do Now:
* File a Police Complaint (FIR): The first and most crucial step is to file a First Information Report (FIR) at your local police station. Clearly state that your PAN card details and selfie have been compromised and you fear potential misuse. Get a copy of the FIR for your records. This document will be important for any future disputes or clarifications.
* Report to the Income Tax Department:
* Visit the official e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.
* Look for a section on “Grievance Redressal” or “Complaints.”
* File a complaint detailing the situation β how your PAN details and selfie were compromised and your fear of misuse.
* You can also try to contact the Aayakar Sampark Kendra (ASK) for guidance on reporting.* Check Your Credit Report Immediately:
* Obtain your credit report from all major credit bureaus in India (CIBIL, Equifax, Experian, CRIF High Mark). You can usually get one free report per year from each bureau.
* Carefully review the report for any loans or credit accounts that you did not open.
* If you find any discrepancies or unauthorized activity, immediately report it to the respective credit bureau and the concerned bank or financial institution.* Contact Your Banks: Inform all the banks where you hold accounts about the situation. Ask them to be extra vigilant regarding any transactions or applications made in your name.
* Monitor Your Financial Activity: Keep a close eye on all your bank accounts, credit card statements, and other financial transactions for any suspicious activity. Report anything unusual immediately.
* Check Form 26AS: Form 26AS is a consolidated tax statement that shows details of TDS, TCS, and advance tax paid by you. Review it regularly on the Income Tax e-filing portal to see if there are any transactions that you don’t recognize.
* Be Cautious of Phishing Attempts: You might receive calls or emails from scammers pretending to be banks or authorities asking for more information or to “rectify” the situation. Do not share any personal or financial details with them.
* Consider a Credit Freeze (Optional): You can request a temporary freeze on your credit report with the credit bureaus. This will prevent anyone from opening new credit accounts in your name without your explicit consent. You can lift the freeze when you need to apply for credit yourself.
General Advice:* Never share copies or photos of your PAN card unnecessarily. Be extremely cautious about who you share it with and for what purpose.
* If you have to provide a photocopy, self-attest it by writing “For [purpose]” and signing across the copy so that parts of your signature and the text are on the PAN image and the paper.
* Be wary of online requests for your PAN details and selfie, especially from unknown or unverified sources.
* Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication for your online financial accounts and email.
It’s important to act quickly and diligently. By reporting the incident and monitoring your financial activity, you can minimize the potential damage from this unfortunate situation.
