March 6, 2025 at 1:54 amHi, wanted to know if I can use old Hindi film scenes for a music video? Will there be any copyright issue? I was thinking of using old Hindi film clips, from before 1980s. It could be Hindi Cinema or regional cinema. Can I use it legally? It’s for an original song of an indie artist.
If yes, till what extent can I use them?
If no, is there any way I can get retro style old videos or images I can use for a music video.
I know it’s legal advice, just wanted to know if I can use them legally. Anyone who know the digital laws etc can please advice.
Thanks. -

March 6, 2025 at 6:15 amYou can approach the people who hold these rights. Most likely it will be the music production houses like T series in case of songs and production houses for movies. In addition, the rights to underlying work lies with music composer as well. All this makes licensing a bit tricky. He erally composers won’t care about the works being used, because they would’ve already parted with the right. So ideally approach production houses, IPRS (it’s a copyright society), PPL(another copyright society) -

March 6, 2025 at 7:30 amCopyright (in cases where it is owned by a company) lasts for 60 years from the date of first publication. So you can freely use anything from movies which were released more than 60 years ago. However, anything less than 60 years would still be protected by copyright and you will need permission of the owner to use it.
