February 18, 2025 at 12:18 amI am 37 and for the first time in my life I am asked to get a birth certificate (getting married in a foreign country). Upon extracting one from the register in my native place in India, I figure a few mistakes. E.g., the name of my father is entered as his pet/informal name (wtf!), my mother’s last name is missing and some other tiny mistakes that I believe could be legally corrected. However, the entered date of birth that I lived with my life and that is on all of the other documents is 4 months less than the one entered in the birth register. Apparently my parents did some self-correction when they put me to school to match the age.
So here is my question – can I *legally* update the dob ( change it to 4 months later) in the birth register to match it with the one on the school documents and passport? To avoid a lot of hustle from doing it the other way around (e.g., changing all documents to match the birth certificate), I truly hope that there is a way to just update the register and keep the rest as is.
Thank you for your advice ๐๐ผ

February 18, 2025 at 12:24 amYou should be able to, and here is my experience with (almost) similar scenarioIn the birth records, my father’s name was incorrect (something completely different from what it actually is) mother’s name was spelt incorrectly
I had to do an affidavit, had it notarised, submitted the original records along with said affidavit in the municipality records section and had a birth certificate with all details exactly as I wanted.
It will be a little bit of navigation that you need to do at the local municipality office, but based on my exp, doable
I did this about 2 years ago.
Good luck

February 18, 2025 at 12:32 amAffidavit, notarization is the solution to a majority of the data problems in Indian systems. I think should be doable.IMO, in the Indian society, father’s name is the most impacted term, so, if that can be corrected, anything can be.
The thoughts in your mind(e.g changing certificate, documents etc) was going through mine as well, but in the end, it was very simple once I was told about the notary route. I was sceptical to be honest, but worked

February 18, 2025 at 4:06 amGet a certificate from your school principal
Get it countersigned by BEO ( ask school about the beo
Block educational officer)This & aadhar will form the basis of correction in birth records
The certificate from school should have dob & both parents correct name & should match with their aadhar or other photo id issued by govt
Tgen apply in same birth records office
Tjey will do it

February 18, 2025 at 2:48 amIf you find right guy outside municipal or court who can sort your affidavits, they’ll charge a premium but even dob is not a problem. You throw money and everything is accounted as data mistake in Indian systems.-
