So, our current landlord decided to move into the apartment below us and started renovations last April. Since then, it’s been non-stop drilling, hammering, and carpentry work—sometimes till 11 PM on both weekdays and weekends. My roommate and I work from home, so this has been a nightmare. We repeatedly told him about the unbearable noise, but he kept saying -“It’ll be done soon.”

Lately, his attitude shifted. Now, it’s ‘It’s my building, you need to adjust’

Last month,we went to our hometown for a bit, and while we were away, he tried to get our window grills and balcony painted—without informing us beforehand. Then, when we returned, he yelled at us for not telling him we were leaving. That escalated into an argument, and he straight-up told us to move out in a month.

Fine. We found a new place and decided to move by month end. But when we reached out to ask about the security deposit refund, he just stopped responding—ignoring calls and messages completely. The apartment is in great condition, and we even have videos from before we moved in to prove it.

He hasn’t moved in yet, so we don’t even know when we can catch him in person.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? Any advice on getting our deposit back?

Recovery as a service! I am sure those bank recovery agents would be ready to pounce on this opportunity

Find out the laws on deposit return in your particular state & per the type of rent agreement you guys have. I believe the money has to be returned within a set number of days (usually 90) or he has to pay interest on the amount. Any deductions should have proper invoices backing the repair work. Make sure your notice of vacating the house is properly documented, no verbal agreements. Make sure all communication henceforth is recorded or better yet, in written, over email preferably or text. In case the house is part of a society, send them a notification too. Also, possibly hop on a quick call with a lawyer about possible options for you guys. It’s better to know your options soon. You only have some control over the situation while you’re located in the house. Once you move you will be on a goose chase for your deposit. I’ve seen this happen so often. If the house owner works, find out his office address too, so you may forward a copy of the notice to his workplace. Usually people might give in consideration of their public image. Leverage everything you can. If he doesn’t budge it’s a longer road with the law. I’m sorry you ended up with a shitty homeowner.

Only way to ” get part security deposit” is to stop paying rent a few months before moving out

Hire a lawyer and send him a legal notice, there’s high chance that he’ll return your money after that.
