UHis wife tortures him continuously. She doesn’t do anything physically but tries to instigate things verbally. Abuses him family everyone. They have been close to being divorced once before this but when girls side found that we won’t be paying for a very large amount of alimony they refused to get divorce. What can be done here.
Abuse includes calling names, cussing, acting indifferent in times when friend was so sick and in pain he couldn’t walk and neighbours heard shouts of pain and came to help. She has verbally also told him to “go kill yourself” one time.

UVerbal abuse amounts to cruelty. Cruelty is a ground for contested divorce. You don’t need the permission of the other partner if you want divorce. You just need to present your grounds.
Courts will decide the alimony and maintenance based on both of their income, social status after marriage, assets, liabilities etc.
Contact a lawyer and get it done before she decides to file random false cases.
