January 29, 2025 at 6:39 pmI live in Bengaluru with two former college classmates in a 2BHK apartment. I have my own room, and they share the other. We’ve had minor issues over the past 1.5 years (like not turning off lights or cleaning delays, which go both ways), but nothing majorโuntil recently.A few days ago, my roommate falsely told her friend’s husband that I had been spreading rumors that my said roommate groped his wife. This man then came to our apartment, created a huge scene, and aggressively confronted me. To prove my innocence, I called every person they claimed I had spoken to, and all confirmed that I never said such a thing. Despite this, the husband continued to threaten and even attempted to physically attack me.
Fearing for my safety, I went to the police station with my friends around 11:30 PM to file an FIR, but we couldn’t proceed as the inspector was unavailable. The next day, I contacted my roommate’s father to explain everything. Instead of addressing the issue, he is now threatening me to vacate the apartment. He also warned that if I file an FIR, they would retaliate by filing a defamation case against me through the woman (the alleged victim of the false rumor).
I donโt want to move out because I was the one who found this apartment, and it’s very close to my office. I have looked for alternatives, but nothing suitable is available.
What legal options do I have in this situation? Can they really file a defamation case when I have proof that I never made such statements? How should I proceed with filing an FIR?
I also came to know that the next day after the incident, He spread other false rumors to our colleagues. (we work in the same office).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
