January 23, 2025 at 12:12 pmI(24f) lost my company’s laptop. It got stolen from from my room, I’m living in a slum, and I should have been careful, I know. I’m pretty sure the landlord is involved. His brother is a hawaldar, they arranged a whole charade of threatening neighbours to return it if they didn’t want to be involved ina police case. Nothing appened so we went to the Police Station where I submitted a complaint. It’s been tree days and nothing has come of it.There was a lot of ruckus at my office which is a BPO and a pretty bad one at that. The laptop was inexpensive and pretty old. They are saying they’ll have to recover 35k from me and will start deducting 7k from my salary next month. I don’t have any money to reimburse them
My salary itself is 13,700 and if they take out 7k from it, I won’t even have the money to eat for the whole month. They have kept the copy of the complaint that I got from the police.
I want to just run away now. I don’t know what to do but somebody at the office suggested that they’d make a police case out on me if I absconded after loosing the laptop. And I fucked up by mentioning to someone that I’ll run away and he told my Manager. Now he wants to me to sign some documents for recovery tomorrow
Can they allege theft to the police if I absconded? Idk what to do please suggest anything?

January 23, 2025 at 12:48 pmYour company should have insurance for theft. Typically if assets are lost – you will have to pay for it. You can ask them to either to stretch the charges over a year as you currently earn very little. If you dont have money to live on – then why would you want to come back work.-

January 23, 2025 at 1:12 pmI shared the copy with them, it was in fact stolen. And at first they said that they have insurance over these things but then they said that there was confidential data in it for US clients so they can’t report it as stolen so I will have to pay them. They are just trying to find ways to deduct my salary and keep me tied up to the job. When I suggested that I won’t be able to survive on deductions they said they couldn’t do anything to alter the payment mode as it was set up by higher up and has been “locked in the system.”Problem is I don’t even have another job and I’m living on rent so I can’t even abscond like that. But if they deduct anything from my salary this month, I’ll be on the road. I’ll be on the road either way

January 23, 2025 at 1:41 pmOP – Your company is charging you for their problem. What if someone steals this at gunpoint. How is it your fault? Basically if your company reports the theft – they will have to report to their customers and this will trigger more expenses and client concerns in terms of security controls.Ask to report a security incident at work and share the copy of the FIR.

January 23, 2025 at 5:01 pm(NAL) This situation just sucks on many levels and I know it can be tempting to abscond but I don’t think that’ll be a good idea, cuz it will potentially show up as a bright red flag in your background check when you try to find a new job.I would say don’t sign on anything for now. Get your copy of that FIR and keep it safe. And try getting in touch with some worker right NGOs or Mahila Ayog or something, they could probably help you out in some way or the other and at least give some useful advice related to your situation.

January 24, 2025 at 3:22 amNALCheck your contract for loaners and company property. I highly doubt they can ask you for money, but if they insist tell them you will file a complaint against them.
If they want to fire you, that’s up to them but no need to run away since you didn’t do anything wrong.

January 24, 2025 at 3:26 amYour company was paying you so low to not afford a place which is not a slum.
Tell them this happens and you are not liable for any theft that happen because of lack of law and order.
