January 23, 2025 at 11:52 am**I’m a 20-year-old male. I drove my friend’s bike to the bus authority to get my pass renewed, as there is little to no transport services in that area due to 26 jan’s prep but was caught and fined midway because I didn’t have a license or helmet with me.****Yesterday, during college hours, one of my friends reminded me that my student bus pass was expiring, and I needed to get it renewed along with them. The bus office is approximately 1 to 1.5 km from the college, so I asked my Sikh friend for his bike. He knew that I didn’t have a license, but since he lives in the area, he had never noticed traffic police there. Being Sikh, he didn’t carry a helmet because of his turban.**
**I went to the office and got my pass renewed, but on my way back, two traffic officers (a man and a woman) jumped in front of me and asked me to pull over to the side. When they asked about my license, I lied and said I had forgotten it at the college. The female officer asked for my Aadhaar card to issue the challan. She sarcastically asked me to bring my license to the court, hinting that she knew I didn’t have one. Being my first encounter with the police, I got scared about what would happen to his bike and other consequences.**
**I had already paid for the bus pass and didn’t have enough cash on me to try to bribe either officer, nor did I have the courage to do so, as they could have filed another charge for attempting to bribe them.**
**Now, the problem is that I come from a lower middle-class background. The challan slip she gave me has the fine amount as 0 rupees, and it states that I’ll find out the amount in the virtual court. After searching online, I calculated the amount to be around โน6000 (โน5000 for the license and โน1000 for the helmet). To be honest, I don’t have that kind of money right now and can’t ask my parents, as they are already struggling.**
**Is there any way I can deter or de-escalate the situation, so I have to pay a minimal fine and avoid going to jail? I’m afraid that if I were to be produced before the court, they might book me for driving without a license. Help me figure out my options.**

January 23, 2025 at 12:37 pmNothingโs gonna happen man. You need to chill out. The vehicle was not yours so the fine is not on your name. And coming to the fine even if you donโt pay it itโs chill. But itโs mandatory to clear all the fines on the vehicle if you are selling it or transferring the ownership to someone.-

January 23, 2025 at 1:48 pmBut it’s my friend’s, I can’t let him eat the fine for something I did , doesn’t sit right with me , also he and I are not that close , so if he outright asks me to clear the fine , I won’t be able to neglect it-

January 23, 2025 at 3:13 pmPay him when you can, itโs not necessary to pay it right now. You have plenty of time to pay it back.

January 24, 2025 at 1:52 amYou definitely need to learn how to be a law abiding citizen! And rather than crying out on Reddit how about telling someone close that you screwed up and seek pratical help. If your attitude remains like this, I am afraid youโd end up coughing up more money to the cops in the future!-

January 27, 2025 at 1:08 pmAll the courts in India have Lok Adalats on some fixed days every year. Just get the information about the next Lok Adalat in your district. There are special benches that are constituted for disposal of cases in an amicable manner your challan amount will be reduced by them and you can pay the challan amount there
