January 21, 2025 at 7:06 amI had recently got my police verification done for my fresh passport but the police guy mentioned I would need to go to the RPO upon getting a notification to submit the gazette. So the scenario is like this; my dad’s surname in LC has the spelling of ‘ Mendonca ‘ but in my passport application it’s written as ‘ Mendonsa ‘ (as per his aadhar). Same goes for me as on my birth certificate and school documents its ‘ Mendonca ‘ and in my aadhar, pan and voter id it’s ‘ Mendonsa ‘. Both spellings are correct in their own way.I’m a bit confused that do I just need to make an affidavit and it’s good to go or would I need a gazette as well? I talked to an agent near me who makes all these and he said both should do the work (affidavit and gazette), no need for a newspaper ad.
Would appreciate your guys advice/help on this!
P.S: The agent stated charges of โน1600 for both affidavit and gazette. Is the charge justified or ?!

January 21, 2025 at 8:05 amThe police guy is right. You need to do the following process:1. **Prepare an Affidavit**: Draft an affidavit on a stamp paper stating your old name and the new name. Get it signed by a first-class magistrate or an IAS officer if the surname is different.
2. **Publish in Newspapers**: Publish the name change notice in two newspapers (one in the local language and one in English). Keep the original copies of the published notices.
3. **Public Notice**: Make a public notice with two witnesses and their signatures, names, addresses, and phone numbers.
4. **Prepare a CD**: Create a CD with the name change matter and a printout of the same.
5. **Gather Documents**: Attach your ID proof, mark sheet, two photos, and a request letter with your name, address, mobile number, email id, and signature.
6. **Submit to Gazette Office**: Go to the Department of Publication in Delhi and submit the documents along with the fee (around Rs. 1100).
7. **Check Gazette**: Check the weekly gazette online and download the part where your name change is published.
8. **Update Other Documents**: Use the gazette notification to update your name in other documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, voter ID card, etc.
I think agents charges are ok

January 21, 2025 at 8:32 amRest of the points yeah makes sense. As for one of them, the agent told me that the publishing in newspaper isn’t really necessary, if I want to do that I need to spend another 1200 or so for that!
