January 19, 2025 at 5:29 pmHi Reddit, TL:DR in the endI’m in a tough spot and could use some advice. A few of my friends have recently started living very lavishly, and their sudden surge in wealth feels suspicious. Here’s what’s been happening:
• One of them, who previously didn’t have much financial means, recently purchased a second-hand car worth Rs. 6 lakhs and gifted multiple expensive iPhones (2 iPhone 16 Pro Max, 1 iPhone 13 Mini, and 1 iPhone 13) to others.
• They’ve mentioned vague things about making money through “trading,” but most of their transactions seem to involve untraceable cash.
• They regularly post bundles of Rs. 500 notes on Snapchat and flaunt their extravagant lifestyle on Instagram, including spending Rs. 30,000+ per week on alcohol and staying in 5-star hotels.
• Some of them are students and don’t seem to have any legitimate sources of income to support such expenses. What hurts the most is that I used to help them a lot during their bad times—whether it was emotionally, financially, or just being there for them. Now that they’ve started making money, they’ve ghosted me completely, as if I don’t exist anymore. I feel betrayed and confused about their behavior.
I’ve also noticed connections to individuals in different cities (Mysore, Srirangapatna, Bangalore) who might be part of their network. I’m seriously concerned that they could be dealing in untaxed income or even counterfeit currency.
I don’t have concrete evidence, but their social media posts and behaviors raise a lot of red flags. I’m torn about whether I should file a complaint with the Income Tax Department or just let it go. I fear reporting them might harm our friendship (if there’s any left) or put me in an uncomfortable position if my identity is revealed.
What would you do in this situation? Should I file a report anonymously and let the authorities investigate? Or is it better to stay out of it?
I’d appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance!
TL;DR: My friends, who I supported during their tough times, are now flaunting unexplained wealth with no legitimate income source. They’ve ghosted me completely, which hurts, but I’m more concerned they might be dealing in untaxed money or counterfeit currency. Should I anonymously report them to the Income Tax Department or just stay out of it?

January 19, 2025 at 5:56 pmTaxation is theft. The government has absolutely no incentive to use our tax money efficiently for our benefit. Even if the tax collection went 10x overnight , we will still have garbage everywhere, hospitals will remain pathetic, trains will remain dirty, Govt schools will remain useless, air will remain unbreathable. We are already paying exorbitant taxes and we still have sub-saharan water quality to drink and Chernobyl level air to breathe.Your friends may be doing something shady illegally, sure, but do you think they are worse than our Elites? Why do you even want to report them to IT? Because they ghosted you and you are not with them to enjoy their ill-gotten gains when they finally have money? It’s life, people come and go, get over it.
And yes, I advocate tax evasion whenever possible. I pay thousands of rupees of income tax every month and we still have whatever I was written in the first paragraph (perks of being a salaried man). Use cash whenever possible, buy the least possible things, spend money only on necessities, buy from small shopkeepers hawkers and use UPI as rarely as possible. Salaried people can’t escape from Direct Taxes, indirect taxes are the only aspect we can affect and save ourselves from this tax-terrorist country.

January 19, 2025 at 6:12 pmThis is a sub for advice for people with pressing legal issues. For the most part. This feels like it should be posted on r/relationshipadvice or r/offmychest and sounds more like a post seeking validation from internet starngers or an outpouring of jealousy.Besides, what specific legal advice do you want? You’re not saying anyone. Do you want whistleblower protection? From what? What are you exposing? You don’t know the source of their wealth and it only bothers you because they ghosted you and you feel like you’re owed something because you helped in the past during a rough patch, otherwise you don’t seem to have a shred of proof that their wealth was obtained unfairly or illegally.
Do you want to report it? Report it. Don’t make a song and dance out of it. Instead of crying about being butt hurt on Reddit a little googling would have pointed out that there is indeed an anonymous tip like operated by the IT department for tax evasion. But since doing that you wouldn’t receive instant gratification or validation.
tldr; should you? Think for yourself and ask for specific legal advice

January 19, 2025 at 9:24 pmYou sound like feeling left out because you’re not a part of it. Don’t be a snitch if you call them friends. If they’re earning money by wrong means, law will definitely catch up with them some day.And for the behaviour meted out to you, work hard, become so successful that they will never be able to reach out to you then.
