January 17, 2025 at 8:42 amFor context, my fathers brothers somehow removed my fathers name from company records as a shareholder back in the 90s. My father lost almost all income, and didnโt really pursue action in this case or in many other cases where he lost assets to his elder brothers. We have been living in this house forever (my father > 50 years) and me since I was born. We donโt pay rent or anything. Utilities, house tax etc are split between my father and the brother who lives here. House tax has been paid in cash last several years. My father is listed as tenant in the electricity boardโs records.
While his elder brothers might not make any move to drive us out – because it will look very bad in front of relatives – once they pass away, their children will probably do so, so they can sell the house. My fear is that even if we are forced to vacate (I work in a different city), upon sale, my father should get his due share.
Are there certain steps we can start taking right now to obtain a legal hold over the property? Any good property lawyers who wonโt bill me to death that you can suggest ? Thanks in advance !

January 17, 2025 at 9:25 amIf the property is ancestral/bought by your grand parents or before then you may still have some rights.Without that there isn’t much you can do.
Does your father still work in the same business or has he separated his financials entirely?
If he has any stake in the business then again some arguments can be made.
In any case you will need to consult a professional lawyer who can understand your position and consult on what may be ways to safeguard yourself.
