UMy sister married her college boyfriend after a live-in relationship, but he turned out to be toxic. During their live-in, he routinely took her salary, claiming it was for rent and household expenses. They officially married in December 2021. Post-marriage, my brother-in-law (BIL) persuaded us to invest in a disputed farmhouse in Noida. Despite concerns, my father contributed financially, purchasing 2 bigha land, half of which he paid for. The sale deed named both my sister and my BIL’s mother. However, no registry was done, and my BIL obtained power of attorney from the seller.
In March 2023, things escalated when my BIL and his family forcibly came to my sister’s residence, demanding she leave her job, move to their family home, and focus on housework and having children. An altercation followed when she resisted. They snatched her phone, removed the SIM, and threatened her. She locked herself in the bathroom to protect herself.
I immediately called 112 for help. The PCR van arrived 2-3 hours later and returned her phone. The next day, my sister filed a police complaint, but no FIR was registered.
Since then, my BIL has filed for divorce on grounds of alleged adultery, citing nothing more than a selfie of my sister with a male colleague as evidence. He has even circulated this picture among relatives and changed her Facebook profile picture to this image without her consent.
We have substantial evidence of domestic violence, including photographs, conversation screenshots, and records of financial transactions showing the money taken by my BIL.
Ongoing Legal Cases
1. Divorce (Filed by BIL): On grounds of alleged adultery. Initially filed in his hometown but transferred to Delhi by the Supreme Court.
2. Domestic Violence (498A): Filed by my sister, but progress is minimal as he frequently skips hearings.
3. Interim Maintenance: No substantial progress here either.
Our lawyer is often unresponsive and repeatedly asks us to wait for the next hearing without any proactive steps.
Key Concerns
Delays and Lack of Progress: The case has dragged on for nearly two years with no proper hearings.
Police Non-cooperation: No mediation closure report or FIR has been filed. My BIL’s father, a CISF officer, seems to influence police actions and possibly bribes officials.
Parental Stress: This prolonged ordeal is severely affecting my parents’ health.
Request for Guidance
How can we expedite the legal process for both the divorce and domestic violence cases?
What steps can be taken against police inaction or bias?
Can we seek any alternative legal recourse to ensure justice for my sister?

Also focus on the road ahead and less on the emotive issues – that is what does your sister want out of the whole exercise.
As your sister doesnt seem to have any kids – ask her to start focusing on getting employed. The maintenance issue should be the first thing the lawyer should close on an interim basis till the divorce case is decided.
