School is keeping my phone illegally until further notice

My school confiscated my phone and like me 30 more students were affected, after some research i found that schools are only legally allowed to keep confiscated items until the end of the school day, what should i do and what is the next step. Can i get a lawyer to send a legal notice telling they can’t keep it?
