April 30, 2026 at 10:01 amI’ve been trying to understand how Zoomcar actually operates legally in India, especially in states like Maharashtra. As per my understanding of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988:
Vehicles used for rental/commercial purposes must have yellow number plates (commercial registration)
White number plate vehicles are strictly for private use
But on Zoomcar, I’ve noticed:
Many cars listed are white number plate vehicles
They allow any individual to host their personal car and earn money
This raises a few questions:
How is this allowed legally?
Under which law or provision does this fall?
Isn’t renting a private (white plate) vehicle considered illegal commercial use?
If stopped by police, who is liable — the driver, the owner, or Zoomcar?
From what I’ve read, using a private vehicle for rental may violate transport laws and could lead to fines or legal issues .

At the same time, platforms like Zoomcar operate on a “host model” (peer-to-peer) which seems to exist in a legal grey area rather than being clearly regulated .

Also saw multiple user experiences online where people got stopped and questioned for using a white plate rental car.
Would love to hear from:
Anyone who understands the legal side
People who’ve used Zoomcar and faced issues
Lawyers or transport experts
Is this a loophole, or is there an actual legal framework supporting this?
