Retrospective maintainance demand post maintainance increase by housing society

r/LegalAdviseIndia I and everyone in society were paying 1000 rs as maintainance for past 5 years now the society realized they are spending much more that they are collecting from maintainance. So, they increased the maintainance by 70 % which is fine, but they are asking for paying the difference amount for all 5 years . Thats more that 40000. Is it legal , are they allowed to do so?
