UI don’t if it’s right place to ask but i seriously need some advice regarding this matter. earlier i posted it on ask indian women subreddit and someone there suggested to post it here:
My friend (22f), originally from west bengal but lives in jharkhand with her parents, has a very toxic and abusive father, he drinks a lot (mostly at night) and causes trouble for her and her mother. last week they went to w.b. for voting and as usual her father started troubling them and tried to assault her mother, she intervened and that causes her minor injury. she and her mother are tolerating his father’s abusive behavior since she was a kid but this time she called w.b police, they came, gave her father warning and went back, next day he started screaming and arguing again, weird thing this time police didn’t bother to come, she called them many times and they said they’ve other works too (they can’t come because of elections) and her father threatens her saying “so many people have come from UP, just one call and you’ll disappear somewhere no one knows), she tried to involve her uncles but he’s alcoholic just like his brother so he suggested his brother to marry her off somewhere and live peacefully. she has to tolerate these things almost everyday because of all this she feels suffocated and losing her will to live, we discussed about it last night and could barely find two solutions. first, she can come to live with me in varanasi (i can afford food for her) but leaving her mum with her father sounds so risky and to come with her mum she’ll have to find a job which seems difficult. second, convincing her mum for divorce which is even more difficult thing to do, her mum thinks if she applies for divorce, her husband will stop supporting them financially and she doesn’t want that. can someone with legal knowledge tell me how much does it cost to file for divorce? and what are chances of getting financial support from her father? or if leaving her mum with father is okay?
