Uneducated neighbours accuse my family of black magic. They blame us for their daughter’s health issues and keep threatening us. This is affecting my father’s mental health. Need legal advice.
**Full story**:
We live in a taluka-level village in India. My family is educated. My father is a teacher. All siblings have completed higher studies.
We built our house about 15 years ago on an empty plot. Right next to us is another house with just one wall between us. The family living there is completely uneducated. The father is a truck driver and stays away most of the time. None of their children have ever gone to school.
They have five children. Two daughters are married. The youngest daughter still lives with them.
A few weeks ago, their mother called my father to their house. She accused us of doing black magic on them. She said her youngest daughter keeps shouting our names and blaming us for her condition.
Since then, they keep saying that if anything happens to her, we will be responsible.
Here are the things they accuse us of:
1) We have a garden with a few large trees. She claims the trees are cursed and we planted them to cast spells.
2) Our bathroom has a ventilator facing their house. We use a geyser, so steam comes out. She says that is “black magic smoke.”
3) When we talk loudly or argue at home, she claims we are transferring curses to her daughter.
My father is very sensitive. This has affected him badly. He cannot sleep properly. He stays stressed all day. We now avoid even normal conversation at home out of fear.
People around us know that this family is uneducated and irrational. And do not believe anything they say, but saying lies a lot of times people takes it as truth eventually.
They keep shouting and blaming us whenever their daughter falls sick.
This is happening even now as I write this.
I am worried about my father and our safety. I want to understand what legal steps I can take in this situation in India.
