How to remove spouse name from Indian passport when marriage never took place?

I had added a spouse name in my Indian passport in ANTICIPATION of a marriage that ultimately never happened. There was no wedding, no registration, no ceremony, nothing that legally qualifies as a marriage.

1. The PSK made this entry without collecting a Marriage Certificate or Annexure J, both of which are mandatory under MEA’s prescribed procedure.
2. Authorities are currently demanding a divorce decree to correct the spouse name entry.
3. Since no marriage was ever legally solemnized, a divorce decree cannot be obtained. A divorce cannot be sought for a marriage that never happened.

How do I remove the erroneous spouse name now?
