May 7, 2026 at 6:38 pmI was 11 years old and my family lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We returned to India a few years later.
In Riyadh, my parents decided that instead of the random surname I had, I should have my father’s surname. So my surname was changed.
My parents seem to not remember if we have any docs announcing my surname change. I don’t think we do.
All my docs since then including my Boards Certificates and my Bachelor’s Degree have my new surname. It has been about twelve years since my surname change. I am 22 now.
I have applied for my Masters in Austria and for the Resident Permit I need to show my Birth Certificate (which has my old surname).
I don’t know what to do? I have never needed my birth certificate for anything prior to this so I never bothered with it.
I am aware that I can go to the notary and stuff to get my surname change published in the newspaper, but how do I know if it will be accepted in the E.U? Google says I need to get it gazetted. Where do I go for these things?
I need to submit all docs by the end of May and I am so tired of the whole process already. Please please help me out.
