Hostel/PG stay without agreement deposit refund issue

Hi,

So I’m staying in a hostel in Mumbai, where owner doesn’t do any agreement and informally tells us that lock in period is 3 months and you can leave later.
I have been living in same hostel for over 2 years and recently changed to a better room in same hostel.
But after changing it, realised that it is not worth the price. I have been paying increased rent already for last 3 months. I had some quarrel with the owner recently and I’m planning to leave the pg soon.

My question is can owner cite any random XYZ reason like i damaged property etc, so as to deduct some amount, just to get back at me? Because we have no rent agreement as such.
But, i have done all payments via UPI and have whatsapp message as proof.

Is there anything I can do to safeguard my deposit.
