Just read this eye-opening article from Business Standard titled “Maintaining Law and Order: Police Forces Urgently Need Legal Training”.

        Some key takeaways:

        – 71% of police personnel (26% “strongly agree,” 45% “somewhat agree”) believe they should be allowed to use torture/violence without punishment.

        – Many support “encounter killings” and mob justice for crimes like sexual assault.

        – 5 custodial deaths per day (2019 data), yet India hasn’t ratified the UN Anti-Torture Convention.

        – Colonial-era policing mindset persists—police act as oppressors, not public servants.

Why this matters: Without trust in law enforcement, how can India achieve its development goals? My thoughts: How do we fix this? More transparency? Community policing? Or is the system too broken?

        – “Would body cams help reduce police violence?”

        – “Why hasn’t India ratified the UN Anti-Torture Convention?”

        – “Share your experiences with police accountability (or lack thereof).”

As a common citizen, if you have to think twice before involving police when you’re wronged, you then have to question the design of the system.

BodyCams, accountable escalation, time bound actions, cctv monitored zones for public dealings are all great measures, but will system allow this ?

Right now, there is not enough agitation within the country to call for a change, we have adjusted to the fact that police is not for us, not unless the matter reaches a critical point, we haven’t had a chance to live in a lawful society ever, hence any marginal gain feels like a big win ( read zero FIR, central control room).

Not surprising knowing that bhains buddhi people dreams about joining police force. They are not to serve the nation, they want to flex their wardi and earn black money.

I agree with this one, many courts eat money and quash their cases.

I am sure there is a higher % who believe in it. A lot of the folks probably were shy to own up to it.

Government also has a part in this

Politians uses police as their lap dog to share the common people

They blocked the movie ‘santosh’ which showcases the police brutality

No wonder they don’t want to release the movie ( Santosh ) about Police Brutality

There are Always two sides to a coin. With the justice system incredibly corrupt, criminals getting bail like toffees, every criminal has a future mindset of judges, heinous criminals getting paroles…the police unfortunately have very few options to maintain law & order, when the same public demands accountability

Does that justify torture? No. But when the entire system is against you, criminals protected by politicians and judges, if 80-90% of the population can walk on streets, we need to be grateful to the police.

The Delhi Nirbhaya case took 8 years under immense public / media pressure, imagine what happens to lesser known cases. Sometimes the police are left with such options to maintain law & order.
