1st gen advocates who made it in profession how difficult was it?

As a law student wanting to pursue litigation, i am shit scared of the picture painted about litigation for 1 gen lawyers.
Please tell me how you did it, what mistakes i should avoid and how to make it in the profession.

Incompetence generate excuses. Have seen many first generation lawyers making it big in the profession and 2-3rd generation lawyers sitting idle.
