        Hello!

I would be thankful if someone could kindly help me with information about my current scenario. A 1000 Rs was ‘accidently’ deposited in my account from someone I do not know via UPI and this was a transaction I had not expected.

I’m wondering what I should be doing now? The sender, a woman from Odissa, gave me maybe 15 or so missed calls in the span of 1 hour to ask me to return their money. Given how many of these scams occur, I told her to go to her bank and initiate a chargeback so she can get her money back and that I will not be returning it directly. Being a weekend, she said she’d handle this on Monday.

Now, the sender also told me that she cannot speak very good Hindi (since she is from some village in Odissa) and was asking me to speak to the bank person on her behalf when she visits there on Monday. Which is weird because she spoke to me in proper Hindi, mostly. And why would a bank need her to speak in Hindi if it’s in Odissa?

I also contacted my bank, and they said they couldn’t reverse the transaction even if I’ve given consent for it. So I had a few questions that follow from this:

        * Should I be talking to the bank guys in Odissa on her behalf to help her initiate the chargeback?
        * Assuming this is a scam, and will be investigated in the near future by any cyber crime branch in the country, is there any way to prevent my account from being frozen?
        * I’m thinking of writing an email to my bank to leave a paper trail, is that a good idea, or should I do anything more?
        * And assuming the account that I received the money in does get frozen, does this affect any other accounts I may have withdrawn or credited money to? Or will it only affect the account I received the funds in?

Thanks for any assistance in this matter!

Just check in your bank account that the money was actually credited or not, if yes return her. Simple

The amount was credited. But given all the scams that happen around this, idk if it’s a good idea to return the money by myself without involving the bank.

Just refund the amount to the same UPI from which you received the amount, also mentioned in remarks as “Refund on mistaken credit UTR “123456827373”

Make sure you return to the same UPI, and not any different UPI which the person will give you.

If you genuinely want to return money. Just empty your account keep only 1k. Transfer it to her. Change all your credentials before you deposit money back in your account. You can wait a week to see if any suspicious activity happens before transferring your actual amount back

Anyone can approach their bank and tag a transaction as fraud and get it refunded from bank. Do not pay them yourself.

It was not a fraudulent transaction. It was may be done mistakenly, but that’s not fraud. That’s just carelessness.

You transfer it once assuming carelessness from their side. And then they’ll keep asking it no matter how many times you send them. They keep saying they haven’t got it.
                          Now who will be careless?

that’s where the “call block” functionality becomes useful

Sit tight and simply don’t budge from the chargeback part. This is most definitely a scam

                                  This happened with my family.
We went to the bank where we hold our account. They spoke to the counterparty who initiated the transfer and decided the best course of action would be to send the money via NEFT after receiving their ID. Money was sent, they confirmed they received it and nothing happened after this.

I guess problems might arise if they send you a link to pay or claim later that they didn’t receive the funds and keep calling you.
I don’t think they can claim a chargeback once u send them the funds without your approval. But I can be wrong

Write a mail to your bank explaining them the situation. And aask them about the further steps. This way you have a proof that you did not do any fraud but rather were interested to get a resolution to this and wrote to your bank. Stop picking up that women or unknown number calls from now on. Under no circumstance pay her anything. It can be a scam. The banks can handle it or she can ask her bank. This isn’t your problem to solve.

You can safely send it back to a phone number, but never to a QR code.

It’s not exactly a naive question. There could be a bunch of challenges if it’s a scam. I do not want my account to get frozen because of someone else. That is something I’ve come across in a lot of news articles and other posts on reddit as something that is done as part of investigations to innocent accounts and that’s what’s scaring me a bit.

I’m ofc more than happy to return the funds and also know that sometimes accidents happen especially given how easy it is to send money via UPI. That being said, I would like to involve the banks since they can also reverse such transfers in principle.

Check your statement to confirm if it is true but by your comments on other’s comments it seems to be really credited to your account and you can check the statement to verify the source and transfer it back. To that same account. Or just call your banks helpline and ask what they can do about it. And ask that lady to do the same(call her bank or visit and register a complaint.)

I actually called my banks helpline. They said they couldn’t do anything about it since it was deposited to my account. I was told the depositor would have to initiate chargeback proceedings from her bank.

But from the call I had with her it seems like either her bank’s unwilling to help her or she does not know how to proceed for making such a chargeback request.
She even asked me to speak to the bank on her behalf, something I will not do.

What upi app do you use ?
If you use BHIM then it has a return button which you can use to return the money back to the original sender.
If that lady is right then her money will go back to her.
If not then it will be declined as the original account would have been closed or been blocked by the bank.
What did your bank told you about the sender account ?
I think you should be a good person and send her the money back to the original sender account and not to account given by her or just cross verify the account. To know if it’s a scam or not.

I use GPay. And she sent the money via PhonePe.
My bank told me nothing besides the name and app used for making the transaction.
I’m gonna let the bank handle this.

Yes, it sucks that she is 1000 short and I’m more than happy to return the money, but I’ll let the bank handle it so it’s less of an issue for me incase this is indeed a scam.

Similar thing happened to me last year, I simply contacted the bank branch where I have my account and gave my letter to the bank manager to reverse the transaction with an authority letter to deduct money from account, and it worked.

Ask her for bank details. Do NEFT. Nothing will happen to you plus if innocent the woman gets it back. If this is a scam – you don’t want that money lying in your account. Also ask her to send WhatsApp msg about what happened and that you returned the money via NEFT. Keep the screenshot and the record of NEFT.

But one scenario that could potentially play out if this is a scam is I send back the funds out of goodwill, and then the scammer goes to their bank and requests a chargeback. In this case, I end up paying 2000 rather than 1000 since the bank will place a lien of 1000 extra rupees on my account. It wont matter if I sent the money before.

It sucks that it comes down to this, because if this is a genuine error, then the process of getting the funds back should be easy enough through the bank directly. But if isn’t, then scammers can just as easily abuse the chargeback feature.

Nothing will happen – there was no fraud so this is not a police matter and no lawyer will take up a case of a mere Rs 1000. At best, inform the bank about this and just live your life in peace. Don’t engage with the other party.

I’m all for returning the money and resolving this matter asap with the person that accidently sent me the money, but I’d like to do it via a chargeback that the sender’s bank initiates.

There’s a lot of incongruencies with her story, starting from the facts she told over the call yesterday.

                                                                                              * She did this once before and the bank didn’t help her and she wants me to speak on her behalf to the bank.
                                                                                              * She can’t speak Hindi well, but she spoke very well in Hindi with me
                                                                                              * She’s from Odissa; told me that 1000 Rs was a huge amount for her, and that she’d go to the bank on Monday when yesterday was not a bank holiday.

Maybe I’m nitpicking, and I genuinely want to believe this to be an error in good faith, but I can’t overlook these minor details that make it very likely be a scam. And I’m still keeping in touch with the other person that sent me the money, I haven’t blocked them yet.

As for the money you lost, making a complaint with the bank and filling a complaint form on the NCPI portal should be all that’s necessary to initiate the chargeback, afaik, but then again, I might be wrong since I’ve personally never had to work around this issue, so take the above with a grain of salt.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me would be able to answer this question better. I hope you’re able to get your money back, though.

Besides this they told me to wait a maximum of 35 days to resolve the issue.
