On January 19th, 2025, I purchased a brand-new LG air conditioner from Flipkart, well in advance of the Indian summer. I did this to ensure my family’s comfort, especially my two-year-old daughter. We live in London and had planned a month-long visit to Delhi to spend time with my parents. My daughter, raised in the UK since she was 8 months old, has never experienced the extreme heat of a Delhi summer. My only intention was to make this visit a pleasant, memorable one — not just for her, but for our entire family.

What happened next has turned into a nightmare that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

The AC was installed on January 23rd, and eveything seemed fine to my poor old parents as the AC was tested for just 10-15 mins on that cold day in January. When we re- started the AC in April after 2 months, The cooling never worked — either due to missing gas or a manufacturing fault. We soon learned that the installation was handled by Jeeves, a third-party service provider Flipkart and LG rely on. But instead of finding a solution, we found ourselves trapped in a cycle of blame and indifference.

LG says they can’t help because the installation wasn’t done by them.

Flipkart says it’s LG’s responsibility since the product is under warranty.

Jeeves admits the unit is faulty and that a replacement is needed — but insists I must deal with Flipkart for that.

It has now been over 25 days since we first reported the issue. LG has sent technicians three times, Jeeves came once, and yet we are still left with a non-functional AC and zero progress. The number of calls, emails, and false promises I’ve dealt with during this time is beyond exhausting. Flipkart keeps calling just to say they need another 14 days — and I honestly don’t know what they’ve been doing in the past 25.

But this story isn’t just about a malfunctioning AC — it’s about how this failure has disrupted our lives.

Because of the heat and the lack of a working AC:

We were forced to sleep cramped in a single room with an old AC unit that barely works.

I had to send my daughter to her mother’s hometown just so she could sleep and stay safe.

My father, who recently had knee surgery, struggled with discomfort made worse by the heat.

My sister-in-law had to sleep in the overheated room, making her visit extremely uncomfortable.

I personally suffered a heat stroke.

And both my spouse and I, who work remotely and need separate spaces for work calls, couldn’t do our jobs effectively.

We come to India just once a year, and this trip was meant to be filled with memories, not misery. Instead, I’m counting the days until I can return to London. I’ve spent thousands of pounds on this trip, only to feel physically drained, emotionally exhausted, and utterly let down by brands I trusted.

Some might think I’m overreacting to a product worth less than ₹30,000 — but the emotional toll, health risks, and disruption to our lives have been far more damaging than that figure can represent.

This isn’t about money. It’s about accountability, empathy, and basic decency. As a customer, I feel completely helpless — caught between big corporations that pass the blame while my family suffers.

My friends and family are urging me to file a consumer complaint and seek compensation for the hardship this has caused. I have most of the paperwork, original bills, technician reports, and emails.

Do you think this is a genuine case for a consumer grievance, and would I be justified in seeking compensation for the damages, emotional distress, and ruined experience?

Hi. I’m a Delhi based lawyer. Would normally advise one to finish at pre litigation level in so far as small consumer disputes are concerned, but this seems like grave deficiency in service. You must go ahead and file a consumer complaint, impleading them all as parties. Seek refund and heavy compensation for the agony caused.

Thanks for sharing. I am on the other hand, willing to go to an extent this time. Tired of these companies taking undue advantage of the consumer.

Did you buy it using a credit card. I would suggest you raise a chargeback request on the card and buy a new ac immediately. Buy from reputed stores near you like croma, reliance digital or any other. Also get the installation done from the brand technician not local vendors, they don’t know shit. Once the chargeback request goes through, they will themselves come and take back the ac.

I have never heard of chargeback. Is it like asking the credit card company not to pay Flipkart? If yes, I can try. Is this something that is practiced often? I used my HDFC diners card for this transaction.

Yes, you can call your bank and tell them that you have received a faulty product and the brand has refused to replace them even after multiple follow ups. They will lodge a case and it takes around 2 months for resolution but they give you a temporary credit in the mean time so that you don’t have to pay the bill. They might ask you to forward your email communication, which you can. You have a 90% chance of success in this case. I have done it earlier with an icici bank card, actually it’s policy is controlled by visa/mastercard so is same all across.

Great! I will try. Thank you. Although this transaction is 3 months old but will still try.

It should still work, you can confirm with the bank customer care for confirmation.

Fight with Flipkart only. LG and Jeeves will not be helpful.
Take it as a life lesson and always get the installation done through the company only.

Flipkart is smart; they send Jeeves guys first, and in TnC, they have smartly mentioned that the warranty will be void if installed through a third party. So, you have to refuse the installation to the Jeeves guys and call LG for the installation.

Hence, Flipkart is at fault here. Give them a tough fight for all your losses.

I couldn’t agree more. This is definitely a lesson well learnt. I am astonished how Flipkart is fooling customers by misleading them into believing that the installation is by LG. However is it by an LG approved vendor. We paid the same or even more. However the warranty clearly says 10 years of compressor and Gas on the bill provided by Flipkart so I also feel LG is playing a very bad game. Thanks for the advice.
