January 12, 2025 at 11:36 pmI’m father of a nri kid with oci card. He is living here since he was three months old. I feel he is missing out opportunities to represent district, state competitions even though he is having exceptional skill in sports. We’ve been fighting with the respective game body but no luck so far. It’s a family sport that everyone in my family plays and just my kid as he is an oci holder unable to participate. As a father I don’t know how can I help a 8 years dreams come true. -

January 12, 2025 at 11:42 pmI’m sorry to say, but you’re in the wrong country. If you’re NRI maybe you should take your kid to a country where sports other than cricket are taken seriously. -

January 13, 2025 at 12:43 amSo you want rights of an Indian citizen without being an Indian citizen & taking on any of the responsibilities. I’ll bet when it’s time to take on any responsibilities you’ll say he’s not Indian. Not to mention that by fighting for his “rights”, you are taking away from some Indian who also has exceptional skills but fewer opportunities here in India & not even the resources to move abroad. Indian opportunities for Indians.
Do other countries give their opportunities to those less fortunate born in other countries? Then Indians have to fight through all the visas & racism.
You’ll seem entitled. He can go to the country where he has citizenship & play the sport there. Indian opportunities for Indian citizens. We are a poor country & have responsibilities towards our citizens first.

OP
January 13, 2025 at 2:13 amThank you, I understand. He was born when I was deputed to foreign country. He lived there hardly for 3 months. We all moved for good to India. It was my understanding a kid can decide on the Nationality only after he is 18. Till then I’m trying to find a way to establish his skills. I don’t find a solution for this.-

January 13, 2025 at 3:49 amThat’s fine, I’ve seen several countries do this where children get to decide which citizenship after they become adults. But other children are Indian citizens right now. It is the country’s responsibility to look out for them first. Every country does this. Some people don’t have basic opportunities in this country, we cannot take from them to give someone who was clearly born privileged.

January 13, 2025 at 12:57 amOCI card holders can play sports at any level except national level. They cannot represent India in certain sports.-

January 13, 2025 at 2:08 amThank you, as far as I’ve researched, After 2009, I see all sports in India are not permitting OCI holders to represent district, state and nationals. The sport body also highlighted the same rule. If I have to take to legally, not sure from where I can start. Many are not aware of the scenario and unable to give right advice.-

January 13, 2025 at 2:10 amMost kids don’t even have passports. How does the local body even know their citizenship? Unless they don’t look Indian or smtn.-

January 13, 2025 at 2:20 amWe only informed when he got selected to Nationals since we had to produce birth certificate for age verification. They asked to produce all documents including passport and now we’re kinda banned state / nationals from playing.-

January 13, 2025 at 1:29 amAre you sure? There are kids in my daughter’s sport who are not Indian citizens. They can go as far as Nationals from what I understand. There are also children who do not attend school in India but fly down during district, state, nationals, etc. I wonder how that is being done. You might want to read the bylaws and see if there is a loophole with which your son can participate.

January 13, 2025 at 2:10 amThank you, the only rule stand in the way is “OCI players are not eligible to play in India”. He was playing for a year and got selected to Nationals but we voluntarily informed about his status and we got response back not to participate.

January 13, 2025 at 2:34 amWhat a joke , Akshay Kumar can act in movies with a Canadian passport, Alia Bhatt with a British passport, but an NRI can’t represent the state or city in sports? As harsh as it may sound but don’t get the passport of your kid reverted to Indian just because of this. If the sport is other than cricket then chances are the kid won’t be able to make a proper living out of it when grows up. If it’s cricket then even with a foreign passport the kid can play in IPL assuming he reaches that level (which is not easy at all)-

January 13, 2025 at 3:00 amThis is the unfortunate reality, but yes, OP don’t change citizenship because of that.If an entity is private, they can use anyone for representation (like BCCI, movies, football clubs etc), but if it is governed by govt entity e.g. SAI, they cannot do it.
So events like pro kabbadi, ipl, even cricket world cup can be participated by OCIs, but events like Olympics, commonwealth games can’t.

January 13, 2025 at 3:25 amNot sure which city/sport. Hyderabad Cricket Association requires a player to be born in Telangana or live there for the last 3 years. Oci holders are eligible – you have to have an aadhar card and reside in telangana for 3 years. This is applicable to play under HCA organized games. I know a couple of kids born in USA and playing in Hyderabad. -

January 13, 2025 at 4:12 amSomething to clear up.NRI = Non Resident Indian. that is Indian passport holders who are NOT residing in India. This is not the case for your child.
Your Child is Not an Indian Citizen. OCI , overseas citizen of India.
Treatment is more similar to a Foreign National albeit of Indian origin. You will be able to get nothing done in courts. If you cannot change his nationality moving back to his country of nationality would be the best bet.
