UTLDR: Abusive father threatened to file a legal case against me and brother, both of us live outside India. I send money every month and he also has multiple properties plus ancestral land which he plans to use for farming. What should I expect if a case is filed? I cant manage travel and my job need to support my wife and kid and have a mortgage.
My father has been abusive since childhood to me and my brother.
My brother has no contact with him due to explosive arguments and abuses. He was always treated as the lesser favourite child. His trauma is much more evident and severe. Brother does not support them financially as well.
Similar situation with me as I’ve reduced contact over the years due to constant abuses and fights but I still support them financially (have been for last 13 odd years). My wife absolutely hates him and my mother never supports us and just acts passive. He’s a typical patriarch and expects us to do as he says. He thinks my wife poisons my ears and all that typical nonsense.
He didnt spend any significant money on both our education as we managed ourselves nor when we got married as I took loans myself so did my brother.
When I had my first kid i invited them to stay with us for a month (in India) but it was a nightmare as he drinks every night and many times became violent , threatening to hurt me my father in law etc. since then I decided to never invite them to my home. My wife would never forget or forgive him for his behaviour and I don’t think she should.
We moved oversees and he moved back to his village where he now farms and maintains his ancestral land (worth 1+ crore) I made it clear that he can do whatever he wants with it and that i want no part of his property.
He’s now threatening to file a case in the local district court to teach both of us brothers a lesson. I want to know what to expect in case he goes ahead (my mother sneakily asked both of us brother our addresses). Can I appoint a lawyer if I cant travel? What are the grounds for such a case and what can he achieve through this?

CThis is most likely just a bluff, from what you have stated he does not seem to have any case for claiming any maintenance from you as he has his own means of sustenance.
You don’t have a cause to be worried, just be very careful when you are talking to your parents or anyone that may be talking to you on their behalf. -
