March 3, 2025 at 3:59 pmHi,I’m in a bit of a tricky situation and need advice on the best way forward. I’m 24 and applying for a passport for the first time, but there’s an issue with my name. My official documents list my name as “A. Name Surname,” where the initial “A.” has no expansion—it’s just part of my name.
According to the guidelines on the Passport Seva website, this naming format isn’t allowed. The problem is that all my documents—Aadhaar, PAN, academic records, etc.—use this same format. Changing my name to comply with passport requirements would mean updating a lot of paperwork, which is overwhelming.
I was thinking: since I have to modify my name anyway, would it be a better option to expand the initial and use it as my first name, and use my name as my middle name? This might minimize the number of documents that need updating compared to simply removing the initial.
I’d really appreciate any advice on the best approach to handle this situation efficiently.
Thanks!

March 4, 2025 at 6:03 amPAN won’t have any initial/ letter either.
It might be printed on the pan card as there is an option but when you log on to income tax website and check your profile what do you see?Actually going forward even visa applications, international documents need full expanded names.
So it’s better to get rid of that initial-

March 4, 2025 at 7:03 amThank you for your advice.
I had a follow-up question about the best way to proceed.I’m considering expanding the initial and using it as my first name while moving my current first name to the middle name. I feel like it would reduce some of the hassle as there won’t be a need to update my school and university certificates.
Would this be the right approach?
Thanks again for your help!

March 4, 2025 at 7:49 amYes. Infact my case is exactly similar. My initial has become my first name and actual name became my middle name.
Just make sure later on your bank account name also is corrected.-
