AHi everyone, I’m a foreign tourist currently in Goa, and I’ve been through a really disturbing experience that I’d like to share – both to warn others and to ask for help or advice.
A few days ago, I was physically assaulted by the staff of an OYO-listed guesthouse in Arambol after I questioned them about a malfunctioning AC that they had repeatedly promised to fix for 5 months. The situation escalated, and while I was trying to film the encounter for my own protection, one staff member grabbed my phone out of my hands – completely destroying it deliberately. I also suffered physical injuries, for which I’ve received medical documentation from a hospital.
I reported the case at the Mandrem police station, but they only filed a non-cognizable complaint and seemed completely uninterested in helping further. I then went to Panjim police headquarters, hoping to escalate it, but they just told me to go back to Mandrem and complain about Mandrem police -which honestly feels ridiculous and pointless. No one has followed up.
Meanwhile, OYO support has responded with generic emails and empty reassurances, saying they’d take “strict action” against the property, but haven’t answered any of my actual questions about what action that is or when I’ll be compensated. Some internal email they accidentally forwarded even seems to acknowledge wrongdoing by the property manager – yet nothing is happening.
All this has caused significant physical and mental distress, and I’m now considering going to the media. I’ve collected medical records, filed complaints, kept all receipts, and documented everything.
Questions I have:
Has anyone had success escalating such cases in Goa or India generally?
Is there any way to force the police to file an FIR or take real action?
Would a lawyer help in this situation, or is that just more cost and delay?
Any specific media outlets or consumer forums that are actually effective?
How do I push OYO to take proper responsibility?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. I’ll try to respond to all comments. Also, if you’re visiting Goa, please be careful – things can go downhill fast, and getting justice here is really tough.

BDo one more thing, post your issue on x and tag the chief minister and tourim minister of goa, along with pm of india modi. Post it if they notice it it wil lbe escalated and solved in matter of 2 days.

Byou can also file case through online in consumer court and report to prime ministers office you can search for pmo grievances and they should help you with it meanwhile you can hire advocate they can tell you about exact sections which be filed against the culprints so that police can file FIR

FSince you’re pushing for action, expect resistance from Oyo or the hotel staff—they’ll likely pressure you to settle and drop the complaint.
I suggest informing the embassy or at least bringing it to their attention, along with all documentation. This could create pressure from above and push for some progress.
Realistically, Oyo will deny responsibility and stall. If it’s just about pride, it may be best to move on. But if needed, you can file a Zero FIR or an online FIR if local authorities refuse to register it.
You can hire a lawyer but without any significant injuries you are just wasting time .indian justice system is slow and painfully

Nsee being truthful it will be better to just forget about the things happened and leave goa , filing case and doing anything won’t be much helpful or result in any desired outcome , the police won’t be able to do anything against these local goons …

MHonestly its best to escape the situation then get stuck in it. Your experience was unpleasant but you will find that the hotel and the police will gang up to shut your issue down.
Move to an alternate hotel and try and get on with you vacation.
I was robbed in a hotel – and the police and hotel took the position that their doors could not be opened by any unauthorized person. And the hotel staff were above all suspicion. The only way I could have been robbed was by hotel staff – considering the time of the theft and who had access to the floor. Like you, the police refused to file an FIR. I had to reach out to personal contacts in the police to get an FIR registered – even though I knew no investigation or action would follow.

AUnderstand. Notice that I got evidence collected & the main attacker has been to prison for doing the exact same thing afaik. Also mandrem police are under pressure for some other cases so I think it’s a good time to put some more pressure on them. But as you said, I don’t expect anything to happen really. Just doing an FIR, I think it should be possible!

AAlso I moved to another place already on the same night of the attack. The next morning one of their women was waiting outside on her bike, driving off when she saw me. I think they were hoping I’ll leave the country, as they scared me a lot using words like ‘drug place’, ‘prison’, … while talking in their language. The next day I was driving to their place with mandrem police car and looking deep into their eyes. I guess they didn’t expect that..

MGreat – but move to another place to stay. The Indian legal & criminal system is best avoided. You can also evaluate going through a consumer court – which follows an arbitration style process.

MGet a lawyer, file a case in local metropolitan court to have police file FIR. They will be forced to once the court intervenes. This is your right.

VYou willingly went to India, knowing what a mess it is. You could have gone to Thailand or any other SEA country. Sorry but justice doesn’t exist in India. Good luck.

LWho in the right mind would visit Goa ? The taxi mafia is worse than terrorists in syria and the shack owner will beat tourist to death 💀 for simple reasons

RGo through a lawyer and stay safe…
Also, reach out to ur embassy as well.
Try to stay in a rented accommodation in a gated society instead of budget friendly hotels like OYO.
Judicial paths are time consuming. -
