March 5, 2025 at 1:31 pmIn September last year, I got a message and a mail saying my credit card (ICICI bank) was used to make a transaction of 41800. This was not for verification, the transaction was already done and the mail said I should report it if it wasn’t me.I immediately reported the transaction, after which they blocked my card and issued a new one. After I got this reported with them, they said an investigation is launched and will take 45 days to conclude, and in the meantime they will transfer an interim credit for the amount 41800 so I don’t get charged for it.
In October, I got my credit card statement in which they were charging me with late payment fee even though I had no pending transactions apart from the fraudulent one that I had already reported. Upon contacting them, they reassured me that I only need to pay for the current month transactions I had made and not the late payment fee. Despite this I was charged the late payment fee anyway, after which I had to contact them multiple times to get it sorted. They made me pay the late payment fee, which later got refunded in the form of credit.
This was a headache for me at this point, so I decided not to use my credit card until the issue was resolved. I contacted them several times and always got the same response that the investigation is still ongoing (even after the 45 days period). So I just confirmed with them that they’ll let me know once it is done.
Fast forward to 2025, I get another statement in February where they are charging me late payment fee on the whole amount. I figured it was the same problem as last time so didn’t contact them until today. Which is when they tell me investigation is over, and I am not eligible for refund because the transaction was OTP verified (which it was NOT).
They claim the OTP was sent on my registered number, but I have all my logs and I did not receive any OTP verification message. I just received a message stating that the transaction was already done and to report the transaction if it wasn’t me.
I even have a mail from them saying they were unable to reach me to confirm this transaction.
When I explained it, they told me someone will contact me within the next 2 days but will most likely provide the same response that they cannot help me.
So I need help with 2 things:
1. What action can I take here?
2. The due date for the February statement is tomorrow. Should I pay the minimum amount due to avoid negative impact on my credit score? or should I trust this will get fixed when my issue is resolved?

March 5, 2025 at 1:46 pmCases like these are rare, but from what I gathered they seem to pull stuff like this whenever it happens.Their other services are fine but I just can’t have peace of mind after this. Like imagine you just randomly lost 40k+, and they just jerk you around half a year just to leave you hanging

March 5, 2025 at 2:48 pmEven I never had any problem with icici. It is rare because not many people face this issue and to be honest not lot of banking people working in these banks have proper knowledge to handle any different situation arising apart from day to day operations. So no one had any clue.

March 5, 2025 at 1:50 pmWhen you report a transaction as fraudulent, they do a ‘Temporary reversal’ of the amount. That way, it will not appear as unpaid and there is no question of late fee. In your case, its not happened. Ask why to ICICI.Secondly, Ask a detailed resolution report of the incident with details of the transaction, otp sent to number, date time etc.
third, approach National Cyber Crime portal (cybercrime.gov.in) and report this with full details.
Seems like bank has enough data to prove that otp is verified. It may be fraud and someone would possible have breached your SIM or phone for a short time? Did you hand over the phone or does anyone else have access to your phone or call forwarding was done? There are many possibilities nowadays.
About your question, pay the due for Feb. That way you can avoid credit impact. If your are able to get the decision in your favor, the amounts can be demanded to be refunded.
So sorry to hear this, it is really a mess.

March 5, 2025 at 2:11 pmI remember reading a few months back that ICICI told the customer that an OTP was sent and all but after RBI ombudsman asked for proof, they did not have any logs therefore RBI told ICICI to repay the customer-

March 5, 2025 at 2:32 pmHey, thank you for your answer and condolences!Yes, that’s what they explained to me what interim credit was. I think it got delayed so I was charged with the late payment fee before the credit reflected in their system I guess.
Not sure if SIM breach is possible remotely or not. But I’d imagine there’d still be a log for the message.
And yea, I was also thinking about paying the minimum due to avoid any issues in case this gets even more complicated.
I will look into National Cyber Crime to make a report. Is all the information in this post enough or will I need to include any other details?
Once again, thank you.

March 5, 2025 at 3:24 pmDo the full payment instead of minimum due. Else they will keep on racking up the interest charges at 36% per annum. If the dispute is resolved in your favour, you will get the amount credited to your balance anyway. But racking up interest charges on 40k INR makes no sense.
Also was this a domestic transaction or international transaction?
What was the charge for?

March 5, 2025 at 3:40 pmRaise the issue on bank site to nodal officer. If not resolved raise it to Principal Nodal Officer. If still not resolved, raise it to RBI Ombudsman. They will raise this to the bank. However you will have to provide all documents and proof. The entire cycle will take time. And if thw OTP as actually been verified from your phone for the trnx then I think it will backfire. -
