March 22, 2025 at 8:17 amI (28/F) went to Ireland for my studies in 2021 and applied for a Forex card to change the money to Euros. Now I had taken out a student loan and they got in touch with a bank to issue this card to me, I do not have an account with them. This Forex prepaid card had about €2800 on it.I used this card for all my basic expenses when I arrived in Dublin for about 6 months till I got a bank account and a part time job. I withdrew some cash and left around €600 as rainy day fund (in case I needed an immediate flight back home or sm). I graduated and got a full time job there and almost forgot about the card until January 2024. I took it to an ATM in Rathmines and tried to withdraw the remaining cash. It gave me an error that sad insufficient funds and charged about €10 just for this. I took it back to check the balance again somehow and tried again in March 2024.
Mind you, I never needed to check the balance or anything online before but I followed the instructions on the welcome letter. (Yes I keep all the documents with me) It showed me a balance of €600 in March 2024.
Now, I went to try and get the money out again from a different ATM, but it kept giving me error messages and the screen would go back to normal start screen. I tried almost 10 times and everytime I would see the balance getting deducted by €2-€10 because I tried to withdraw between €100-€600. Nothing came out. I pressed the cancel button a couple of times (I do it out of habit) and went home. The card lay forgotten until I saw it was expiring in September 2024 in May, and thought I should inform the bank about this.
I logged in to the portal again and saw an ATM transaction that took €300 from my Forex card the same day I tried to withdrew!!!
Now, long story short – I have tried to go back and forth with the bank since May 2024. It’s almost been a year. I get a response that I did withdraw the money even though I AM EXTREMELY SURE I DIDN’T.
They did internal investigation twice and said they can’t give it back. I complained about this to the local police and sent them a copy of FIR. I sent them all my personal documents and pages of my passport and stuff. I tweeted about this and wrote a thousand emails. I get extremely carefree responses every week saying we’ll respond to you in a week (followed by date) and this itself goes on for months.I am very frustrated and I know if I seek legal help they’ll cut all communication with me and everything will go through the legal team since it’s a well established private bank in India.
– This is a well established Indian private bank
– The card expired in September 2024.
– NO ONE knows the card pin except me.
– Couldn’t have been the loan guys too since I received the pin in an envelope sent directly to my home address in my home country.
– I’m sure visiting in person wont help.
– They did change dates of transaction once in the statement after this. I wasn’t able to login to my portal and when I did, the date was changed and everything else was gone from before 2024. I don’t have the earlier statement sadly but have the new one.
– The lady I spoke to on call told me I should’ve tried to do a merchant transaction instead of ATM as these things are bound to happen, making me wonder if there are more like me.Any suggestions on what should I do next?

March 22, 2025 at 8:31 amI think mostly one of the ATM you tried had a skimming device to get your card details and hacker or scamster must have withdrawn funds just as you left the ATM it happens a lot nowadays-

March 22, 2025 at 8:38 amI knw but its one of the reasons it might have happened i always check every atm or card POS i swipe with my card. I caught a skimming device at a gas station in Naples Italy it was like such a perfect copy of orignal atm car entry-

March 22, 2025 at 8:40 amMmm seems unlikely but I’d still need the bank to prove that the money was indeed taken out-

March 22, 2025 at 10:28 amAlso I did check the Garda website and it happens in Dublin and other counties there, however I area I went to is posh. But again it doesn’t matter. The bank needs to prove that the cash was indeed taken out.

March 22, 2025 at 9:37 amIf the amount has been deducted more than 6 months ago, usually you can’t dispute. There is a statute of limitation for this. It’s your duty to have constant check on the balance if you haven’t noticed for more than 6 months it gets difficult for them to investigate.-

March 22, 2025 at 8:31 amFile a complaint with Ombudsman and provide timelines and proof. Bank will have to justify and if found that its banks fault, you will be compensated for the loss-

March 22, 2025 at 12:18 pmI’m really not sure how this would be hacked if this was just kept locked for over two years. I’m really confused about this whole thing too and looking at the comments and downvotes, apart from one response I didn’t get anything helpful either.-

March 22, 2025 at 4:31 pmIt happened with me as well but I noticed it within a week so filed a dispute with bank and got back the amount. In your case since it’s too late I doubt if the bank would resolve the dispute in your favour..-

March 22, 2025 at 2:02 pmi don’t know how to say it in a polite way but your money is gone.. there is no way to prove that it isn’t you.. any frauds should be reported within 24 hours and now it’s too late… you will end up spending more on lawyer even if you want to go ahead… there’s just no way to prove that you got scammed-
