I wanted to know one thing. My father has an account with the Central Bank of India in which there are no recent transactions. However it was used for some old official work, so it’s been kept open. In 2021, after the lockdown, my brother deposited 500 rupees through the bank, just to keep the account active. The bank staff gave a stamped receipt. We then forgot about it. Now, at the end of 2024, when we needed the account, we went to check and deposit another 500 rupees. But when we updated the passbook, the 500 rupees deposited in 2021 wasn’t showing. When we asked the bank staff, they were all new, but they took a photocopy of the application and receipt and emailed the head office. The head office rejected it because the receipt only had the official stamp and not the signature of the bank cashier person who received the money. The bank manager said that data from two years ago is kept in some old files and isn’t online, so it’s difficult to find. He said they would still try. The issue isn’t about the 500 rupees, I know it’s a small amount, but isn’t this serious negligence on the part of the bank? What if the amount had been larger? What action can be taken against the bank in this matter, even though we won’t go to great lengths for 500 rupees? I still want to know.

Please first go through the whole escalation matrix, ie. usually general customer service / branch manager -> nodal officer -> only then go to ombudsman.

This is the correct and required flow. Ombudsman is only for when the lower entities don’t provide a resolution or response and ombudsman will ask for a proof of complaint to them.

I think they were debited as annual maintenance charges and you are left with nothing now

No bro, it’s not like that. After updating the passbook, the printout shows all the transactions that have happened, where there is no mention of the 500 rs being credited

Visit the manager with someone respectable or a warning of lawyer notice .

No need for lawyers, the RBI has very goods escalation matrices established for banks.

Sir/mam my advice was to give a light warning of lawyer notice and not actually hiring a lawyer . RBI is best but should be used as a last resort .

My point is, there is a whole escalation matrix that designed specifically for this and is very effective. Threatening with lawyers, etc at one time was needed but now is just a waste of time and peace of mind.

As a banker myself what i have experienced is small issues like this can be solved at banks level itself no need to waste everyone’s time & effort through actual legal route ,unless if op wants some type of revenge on bank’s current employees which they probably don’t deserve because the actual mistake is done by previous employees.

Raise official complaint with the bank with proof. Keep following and escalating it higher ups. Then finally ombudsman complaint after 30 days from the bank complaint. Don’t let this go. If the bank is at fault then they will have to pay quite a sum as fines.

I completely understand why this feels so unfair. It’s not just about the money, it’s about trust and accountability. If a bank can lose track of 500 rupees, it makes you wonder how many others might have faced the same issue with larger amounts. It’s frustrating when the burden of proving their mistake falls on you. Even if you don’t want to go through a long fight, raising a complaint could help prevent this from happening to someone else. You have every right to expect better from a bank.

Yes, the receipt has the stamp but not the signature of the counter clerk as you have mentioned.

You will find such blank stamped receipts in abundance in the crowded banking halls.
