January 28, 2025 at 6:24 amI am in the process of buying a plot near my workplace. Today, at the SDM office, I was asked to submit my marriage certificate as well. As far as I know, none of my male colleagues have submitted their marriage certificate for buying land. Is it the same in other states as well or is it just my double standard maintaining state that boasts of equity and equality and treats me like a second class citizen? I’m furious. My husband thinks that I’m overreacting. -

January 28, 2025 at 9:06 amWell, in Sikkim, a woman typically needs to provide a marriage certificate when buying land if she is married to a non-Sikkimese man, as the state has strict regulations regarding land ownership for Sikkimese women married to outsiders. -

January 28, 2025 at 9:13 amSikkim has laws to protect the rights of its indigenous population. Under Article 371F of the Indian Constitution, the state has special provisions to preserve the identity, land rights, and culture of its people. Non-indigenous individuals, including those who marry into the community, are restricted from owning certain types of land, which is why they are asking for your marriage certificate. This helps authorities verify whether you qualify to purchase land under the stateβs regulations. It also prevents unauthorized transactions and ensures land ownership remains within the local community.

January 28, 2025 at 8:44 amIn our state, if we marry people from other states, there are a lot of complications. Thankfully I was unmarried before I landed a govt. job or else that would be a hassle.
