March 22, 2025 at 10:12 pmHey everyone, I’m a 10th grader trying to figure out what I want to do in the future. Lately, I’ve been really interested in law, and I’m debating between corporate law and criminal law. I love the idea of arguing cases in court and fighting for justice, but one thing is bothering me—do criminal lawyers have to defend everyone, even if they don’t want to?
I’ve heard that as a lawyer, you’re supposed to ensure that everyone gets a fair trial. But I really don’t want to end up defending people accused of serious crimes like murder, rape, or terrorism. I feel like I’d rather work on cases where I’m helping innocent people who’ve been wrongly accused or maybe even representing victims instead of criminals.
So, my main questions are:
1. If I work at a law firm, will I have the freedom to turn down cases I don’t want to take? Or do firms just assign cases to junior lawyers, and you don’t get a say?
2. If I start my own practice, would I actually get enough cases to make a successful career if I refuse to defend people accused of serious crimes?
3. Are there areas of criminal law that focus more on corporate crimes, financial frauds, or white-collar cases instead of violent crimes?
4. If I want to only take cases where I’m representing victims (instead of defending accused criminals), is that even a practical career option in India?
I really want to be a lawyer, but I don’t know if criminal law is the right fit for me. Would love to hear from lawyers, law students, or anyone who knows how this actually works in India. Thanks!

March 23, 2025 at 2:38 amBeing a criminal lawyer , you have to defend rapist , murderer , thiefs , robbers , corrupt and 3rd class convicts. Many people don’t like it.And don’t watch too much movies, this is not right age to select career. It is cognitive bias. It happens to everyone.
Focus on your study. See which you are good at and move in that direction.
