I made the biggest mistake of staying with colive Bangalore when I moved to this city. I just stayed for 3 months because they doubled my rent and I could not afford it anymore. Then I was told that was because that was the actual rate but I had gotten a much cheaper rate as an offer time. While signing, this wasn’t conveyed. My deposit of 20000 is as good as gone but they’re not sending me legal notices to pay 5400 rs extra. I am still new and alone in the city with no way to figure this out. In the invoice they’re put almost 14000 as repairs which is insane as the house when I left it was in a pretty good condition, painted and everything. What should I do?

Colive pgs are a big scam. Idk why this isn’t common knowledge by now. They always scam you into paying untold charges and don’t retrun deposit. Happened to me and most of my friends.

I’ve heard similar stories about not only Colive but other pg stay setups too.

So in your case, since you stayed for 3 months and left the house in decent condition (painted and all, like you said), ₹14,000 for repairs is just way too much. They can’t randomly slap that amount on an invoice without any real proof. They need to show you legit bills, photos of the damage, or a signed inspection report. If they don’t have any of that, they can’t just decide to cut that out of your deposit.

As for the rent hike thing, you mentioned they told you later that the low rent was some kind of offer. If that wasn’t properly explained or written in the agreement you signed, that’s on them. They can’t suddenly double the rent and then say “oh that was just a promo.” If it wasn’t in writing, it’s not binding.

Now about the legal notice for ₹5400. A lot of these companies send legal notices just to scare people into paying. A notice is not the same as a case being filed. It’s more like a warning. You actually have every right to reply to that notice and explain your side. You can send a reply saying you don’t owe anything, that you vacated properly, and ask them to share proof of the supposed damage and dues.

You can draft the reply yourself if you’re comfortable, or if you want to be sure it’s done properly, just get a lawyer to write a response, it’s not super expensive. Even online services can help with this kind of thing.

Keep all records. Like photos of the room when you left, chat or email convos with the property manager, any receipts or handovers. Just in case it escalates, having that stuff helps a lot.

Don’t let them push you around just because you’re new in the city. You have legal rights, and what they’re doing sounds unfair on a few levels. If you need, reach out to a consumer lawyer or look into sending them a legal notice back about the deposit. they’ll back off once they know you’re not going to quietly take it.
