SI’m a student at a well-known physiotherapy college in Pune, Maharashtra. Recently, the administration decided to remove all air conditioning units from the classrooms, citing “energy conservation” as the reason. This decision was made at a time when Pune is facing extreme heatwaves, with temperatures soaring to around 45°C (113°F).
The classrooms were originally designed for a centralized AC system and have only one small window that opens. The ventilation is almost non-existent, and during afternoon lectures with 60+ students packed in, it becomes unbearably hot and suffocating. On top of this, professors often switch off the fans so students can “hear them better,” which only worsens the situation.
Adding to the frustration, the staff rooms and teacher cabins still have fully functioning ACs. So the energy conservation argument feels hypocritical and selective.
We’ve tried raising this issue with the college administration through informal complaints, but no action has been taken, and the situation is only getting worse. Several students have already experienced headaches, dehydration, and near fainting spells during classes.
Is there any legal route we can take to compel the college to address this? Are there guidelines or health & safety regulations for educational institutions in India that they could be violating by creating such an unsafe learning environment? Any advice on how to proceed would be highly appreciated.

LYou can’t demand anything. I know your generation feels you have a lot of ‘rights’ etc like you see in the movies and read about incidents in the US etc. but you actually don’t. It’s not just you but that applies to all of us. AC’s are for the privileged. It is not your right. When a farmer goes to work does he carry an AC with him? No! Most schools/colleges in India barely have fans, clean toilets for women, differently abled friendly let alone AC’s.
Since you posted on Legal Advice India – most court rooms and government offices don’t have AC’s either even in remote places in Rajasthan and Gujarat where the temperature is crazy.

BIMO if the room was built properly ventilated then it’s not such a big issue, but if the room was built with focusing on AC as cooling unit and they reduced the windows to give better air trapping then it becomes a hot chamber

LWell if they thought so much while constructing buildings in India, our country would have a different landscape. Like I mentioned- these buildings are not even disabled friendly (which is mandated by law) let alone designed for ventilation.

SIs this a private or public college? Did they advertise AC classrooms? When you paid fees, did you have information that led you to believe you would be studying in AC classrooms? If they did, you may be having some rights under false advertising and misleading/fraud.

SPrivate college. They did not advertise anything about AC classrooms, but the classrooms are designed for a centralised AC system. The windows are concealed and the ceiling height is around 7ft.
They recently discovered that the AC vents were blocked and need replacing which will cost them around 5CR ( beefed up numbers for sure). But also centralised AC works in the faculty lounge and other common areas 🤡 -

PThat’s unhygienic. Be united and don’t be afraid to raise the voice. If all of you stand together college will not be able to sabotage any of your career.
This is just a cost saving practice in the name of energy conservation but disregarding safe health conditions.
If one of you guys have air quality monitors, document temperature, humidity and CO2 before and after.
Find some of your law studying friends and consult them. As a united group formally write to college first demanding a response within 48 hrs. If response is not satisfactory then simply go ahead and file a case against the college. No negotiations.

HAt times I just love ABVP 😂😂😂
Happened in my college too they removed the ac’s and installed them in different department building (corruption they ate up the money given for installation of ac’s). Our department was told ac’s are old and causing harm to our environment. Nothing happened when we complained to department and heads. Eventually ABVP came to rescue they made sure none of the ac’s are used anywhere in the entire college. Not even in VC’s and PVC’s room🤣🤣🤣
Moreover they went to the department where the ac’s were installed and wrote with paint the name of the department from where it was removed along with the date of removal 🤣🤣🤣

PArrey lodu I graduated from Ivy League and tum jaise chutiye India me about hai. Bad environment / regressive attitude is not equal to better education. Here in US students get all the facilities and guess which country has better R&D and which country has gawar IT coolie.
