Hi everyone,
A few days ago, I sent a package to my relatives in Hyderabad via Delhivery. The contents were worth ₹4000 (declared while booking).The delivery kept getting delayed, and after raising multiple complaints and emailing them repeatedly for 10+ days, they finally marked the shipment as “lost.”
Now, they’re offering me just ₹700 as compensation — which is nowhere close to the declared value. I sent them my bank details within the 24-hour window they gave, and they’ve told me the refund is “initiated” and will reflect in 10–15 days.
I’ve tweeted about it and emailed them again, but they keep saying this is as per their policy.

FWhen you courior something, they also ask you what’s inside to add compensation if lost. This price increases if the item is more valuable.
Do you have proof of courier value worth ₹4000, in receipt?

DI’m a lawyer but it’s a request to pls use full forms for a better understanding of your advice by everyone. Also, consumer helplines won’t help you in any manner. You either resolve it amicably or just send them a legal notice and file a consumer complaint.

QTotally agree. Recently my cousin had some issues with the Toyota dealership. Then we typed a long post on X and tagged the consumer helpline along with pm, cm and what not. The same day the Rajasthan government’s consumer grievance department issued a notice, asking for a solution within 7 days and asked him to forward it to the dealership, and within a couple of days he got a call from someone at high post in Toyota and provided an acceptable solution.
So yes, the consumer helpline is worth giving a shot. Also, posting on X(tagging higher authorities) does help in faster resolution. I have also done the same quite a few times when I had issues with banks and I got a faster resolution. -

India does not have the concept of punitive or exemplary compensation. So your best bet is to take what they’re offering. Just because you’re claiming the value of the shipment is 4k does not mean they are bound to pay it. The shipping document/contract/receipt they give you always states the maximum amount of their liability. Even stuff sent by India Post, the government service, has their maximum liability capped at 2x the shipping fee paid.
In future, for high value shipments, you are recommended to use India Post’s Speed Post with Insurance. There, you are paid back the full declared value in case of loss/damage in transit.

SCheck [here](https://www.indiapost.gov.in/MBE/Pages/Content/Insurance.aspx). At the top of your package, you have to mention in bold letters INSURED SPEED POST, INSURANCE VALUE Rs. XXX.
Some post office workers are not familiar with it. You can speak to the post master of the branch and get it done. Insurance can be done for every post and every parcel, do not let them fool you into believing otherwise. It’s just laziness on their part.

WIndia post is trash, sent around 20k ruppees in old notes to RBI via india post’s official channel a couple of years ago, got a letter from RBI that the envelope was empty. Had insurance and everything, still no resolution, prob someone in the chain emptied it

SIf it’s insured for 20k, you’ll be paid 20k by India Post if you filed an insurance claim. Especially a letter from RBI stating that it’s an empty parcel, that’s bullet proof evidence.

WTried everything man. They just know how to shift blame to the other party. Even filed a complaint in the consumer forum with all the written evidence from RBI, the post office, the insurance receipt, etc. Still got nothing

I used to send some parcels using Speed Post to North India & never faced any issue

SDelhivery lost my package too, i followed up with them for one month, they were giving me stupid reasons for the delay, i tried to reach everyone possible in the team and the delivery executive, after one month they said they’ve lost package and i told them to atleast update the same in the app so that i can apply for refund and refused to do that , after couple of days i went to delhivery hub in my town where the package supposed to be delivered. i took my cousins with me and told if don’t get my refund i’ll grab whatever package i see in the godown and leave and he requested to not do that and he let me speak with his manger and he assured that i’ll get my refund and after a couple of days they gave 100rs refund, the package was a sim card that i was sending it my mother and this sim card important because my mother lost my phone and i was sending a new sim as a replacement and all her bank accounts were linked to that number. it was a mess.

Sorry to hear you’re facing this — but yes, you definitely have legal options here.
Since you booked the service with Delhivery for personal use and paid for it, you fall under the definition of a consumer under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Losing your package and then offering just ₹700 as compensation — when you declared the value as ₹4000 — is a clear case of deficiency in service.
Now, they might claim this is part of their “standard policy”, but legally, that kind of one-sided clause doesn’t hold up unless it was part of a properly agreed contract. Companies often put these terms in fine print or in hidden links, but courts usually strike them down if they’re found to be unfair or unreasonable.
You can file a complaint before the District Consumer Commission (under Section 35 of the Act) and demand:
Full refund of ₹4000
Compensation for mental harassment and inconvenience
Litigation costs
Just keep all your documents ready: booking details, emails, chats, and screenshots of their refund offer. You may need to prove that you declared the value of the goods.

You have already been patient, but if they’re not responding properly, you might want to consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Forum or escalating it to the National Consumer Helpline. Sometimes, just knowing you are ready to take legal steps can push them to take you seriously.

SI have decided never to use that shit Delhivery again and would suggest others for the same. My gf sent me my birthday gift which she packed herself from Jaipur to my city and instead i received some different parcel with sarees in it, i thought she was playing a prank with me, I rechecked and the sender’s address was her’s. Then called her up and realised that these idiots somehow managed to lose my parcel and have sent me someone else’s. So after days of inquiring they found my parcel in Hyderabad delivered to the person whose parcel was delivered to me. In total it took a month for me to get my parcel. No apology-nothing. Not even some coupon shit.

SDelhivery is a fraud company, I ordered multiple shirts from Myntra, only those delivered by Delhivery were delayed and in one case the new shirt was replaced by an old t-shirt. Myntra immediately approved the return with tag scanning etc, but delhivery people never came to pick it up, instead they would declare customer not available and cancel the picke up after 2 failed atempts. I had to followup multiple times with both Myntra and Delhivery, eventually Myantra refunded me but Delhivery is yet to come and pick the package..

PI once sent a package through TrackOn from Del to Coimbatore back in 2018 it was an iPhone 7+, Fortunately I took a ₹1500 insurance on the package the declared value was ₹50000 the package got destroyed otw I was given the insurance money within 15 days. Insuring the package has been one of the best decision I’ve ever made.
