How long from the time you file a contested divorce, will the other party be notified? Once its officially filed, does it become public record or does it take sometime before the records are uploaded to the ecourts portal? I am trying to prevent a friend from believing something that may not be true. But I want to have a better understanding before I speak to it.

The time taken to deliver the notice/ summons in divorce cases, depends on multiple factors – correctness of the address, respondent’s distance from the jurisdictional court, refusal by the respondent to receive the notice, unavailability of the respondent, etc. The personnel from the court tries multiple times to deliver the notice. If this method fails, the email or WhatsApp may also be used by the court to deliver the notice. Even if these methods fail, publication in different levels are tried. So, the time it would take could be between few weeks to couple of months in ordinary cases.

Make sure that you are providing the correct address, phone number and email address while filing the petition.

**Disclaimer:** In the absence of all the facts of the case, the comments given may not be the best solution for your case. One on one consultation with a legal counsel/ advocate is advised to get better guidance.
