March 21, 2025 at 6:15 amSo as it is glorified in movies, Members of law fraternity can give real life answers as they interact with persons arrested as well wisher to defend them. So lawyers is it true that police beat almost each and every person in custody untill n unless he is very rich/influential. What are your personal experience on this? I know as per written things police can not beat anyone but reality is different from books -

March 21, 2025 at 11:34 amI know few cases where the criminals in custody died after third degree. And you won’t imagine the horror entire police station goes through. So police know when to stop thrashing, it’s not that they thrash due to their personal frustrations.
When these lowkeys act smart then only police have good time with them.

March 21, 2025 at 6:24 amIn most of the case they do. Actually if you are inside a lockup, policeman of different ranks and shifts will be coming to you, asking why are you here, will taunt or abuse you that’s a very normal thing they do. Additionally, if anyone of them are drunk, frustrated they will surely trash you.One of my relative was arrested for a false case, it was a conspiracy because he complaint about that SHO few months back for bribery for some traffic challans. Now that SHO picked him and trashed him badly. We filed a complaint in State Human Rights Commission, it took almost 1.5 yrs but the SHO was proven guilty. Disciplinary action was taken against him and Rs. 5 L was given to the victim from his salary.

March 21, 2025 at 8:55 amYeah and thn we moved to High Court. Court asked for cctvs footages but SP said there are no working cctvs, which is again a violation of supreme court judgement. At the end suspend ho gaya but India hai, SI ko bachane SP bhi khara ho jata hai. They are gonna defend their community and as a normal citizen it’s really hard to fight against them. They can do anything to stop you.

March 21, 2025 at 6:31 amDepends on person to person if you’re someone with contacts police will be offering you chai, if your just low life criminal they will beat the shit out of you, because I have personally seen this, my friend was caught doing the deed at 3AM by his GFs parents, They handed him over to police, he called me so I went to police station At 4AM and I contacted my father, then instead of asking bribes they offered chai.
Where’s some days after another person from my locality was in the same situation police beat him and took 15k and told him to leave-

March 21, 2025 at 7:04 amAlthough policing has improved a lot, it is still almost guaranteed that if you are in a lockup, you will be abused both verbally and physically. Police need a generation of well-trained officers to undo the rot that is present.
You have asked about the accused in lockup; sadly, it is not uncommon for even the complainant to be roughed up in multiple cases, especially in poorer neighbourhoods or tier-3 cities.I will give you some examples:
1. I was approached by a 20-something-year-old girl who was getting multiple calls and texts. She kind of knew it was her ex, and being the educated girl she was, she decided to complain to the police.
The girl was morally policed on the call, and the police threatened that they would come to her place if she continued to report this. Only when I intervened and involved a higher police authority did any action get taken.2. In my locality, a guy’s home was attacked by stones. The guy went to complain about this, as he kind of knew the offender. The police again morally policed him, asking why he required police for such small matters. They questioned if he wasn’t man enough to handle it on his own. When he made the mistake of telling them “law and order” was their duty, they slapped him.

March 21, 2025 at 7:06 pmPolice are constitutionally given rights to beat up citizens (when it matters). Our cop culture is a legacy handed down from British colonial hangover – so the cops at all ranks are taught to be very curt and ruthless with citizens.
This is specifically true for cops posted under Law and Order (basically the section that deals with murders, thefts etc.) The traffic, cyber crime etc. are more mellowed down generally.
The crime branch are usually the most ruthless as they regularly deal with rapists, murderers, rowdy sheeters etc.
Since there are 1.5 billion people, the amount of people doing crime is also quite high. So the cops usually are very very rough, this means that even the accused (and not guilty) also face the heat.

March 22, 2025 at 5:13 amYes, I’ve personally witnessed it twice. And it’s not just about beating—it’s about humiliation. In one incident, three accused (in a theft-cum-murder case) were stripped naked, forced into half-squat positions with arms outstretched, and beaten with a wide belt-like strap made of the same material as police belts. The officer had even nicknamed it “Billo Rani.” They also used trans persons (one of them was also named Rani, present in the thana) to further humiliate the accused by making them slap or beat the detainees.
The second time was during a theft case at my own factory. Six suspects were picked up. They were beaten with the same strap—on their palms and soles, and then made to rub their hands and jump on their feet to avoid visible marks.
What you read as “kadai se puchhtach” in the news is often this in reality.
